5.3L to 383 stroker
My block is at the machine shop getting sonic tested now. Barring anything crazy I will be punching is out to 3.905 and installing a 4" crank soon. the bottom end will all be forged. 10.8:1 compression is what the compression calculators are telling me.
I am pretty new to all this, been reading a lot over the last couple of months. Several of these have been done but it seems most step up to a 6.0 and build a 408 stroker. I am not going that route. I want something a little different and am curious just how far I can push a NA "5.3". For anyone interested here is the parts list K1 technologies crank Callies H-beam rods JE 10cc dish pistons Ported 243 heads (milled.035) Cam will be a custom grind TBSS intake with 54 lb injectors 92mm TB I will eventually put a 150 shot or so on it but just going to get it running for now. I have no idea what to expect power wise. I decided to go with the stroker to up the torque for hauling the truck around. I wil update as I go. |
Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
Depending on what kind of cam it ends up with, your dynamic compression will change a bit. The milling will decrease it a bit, but depending how much the chambers are worked, you might gain volume there. I'm assuming this is supposed to stay a pump gas truck?
Do you have any #'s on the heads (or who's heads they are)? What about a rough idea of cam? Between that and how high you plan on spinning, the #'s could be all over the place. I don't think in the neighborhood of 550 would be out of the question provided your willing to spin it a little. |
Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
The heads are OE 243/799 castings that I am having ported. Pump gas is definitely the plan. Plans are to spin it up to about 7k.

They all have killer CNC programs for that factory casting. On motor with those heads on a 383 LS, I'd say 450rwhp would be a a piece of cake on any dyno. Torque probably in the same range, near 450 at the tire. |
Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
On a stock casting, HeavyMetl #'s are a bit more realistic than mine.

Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
I think it was either Chevy Hi or Super Chevy that did a pretty neat build along the same lines. Iirc they used some pretty badass heads, and I think at some point they threw boost at it too.
Oh, and make sure ARP Rod bolts are on your parts list! |
Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
243 heads are a great choice! So many of them around for relatively cheap. Note for future buyers, there no need to fall for the "sodium filled valves" pitch and pay up for Zo6 243's the regular 243 gets the job done just as well and found on I think a lot of 02 LS1s and all the 04 GTOs. Maybe if you're spinning the motor to 7k+ they're a good option though. I think the exhaust are the only ones sodium filled? My past LS life says 450 crank should come pretty easy

Re: 5.3L to 383 stroker
Nice. I have a similar iron 5.3/383 combo going in the buick, but haven't run it yet. It's getting fed by a pair of S300s though. lol.

I have a similar combo but I stayed with a stock stroke 347 cube motor because I plan to lay some boost to it.:metal: |
