Need Carb Help in No. KY
 

OK I'm hoisting the white flag!

Any forum members in the Northern KY area who understand and appreciates the Rochester Quadrajet or knows of anyone who does who would be willing to help out a total idiot please let me know, I could really use some hands on help. For whatever reason, I can't get this damn thing to drop off high idle and I'm sure it needs to be adjusted. I've read as many posts and watched as many videos as I can find and I think I'm more lost now than I was before. Besides, I learn better hands on.

Is this when you first start it cold? Or after it has warmed up?
Does the throttle lever go all the way to the adjustable idle stop screw on drivers side?
If it doesn't,then the choke idle speed screw is too far in causing a too high speed.This screw is on the side of the carb on the passenger side down low at the end of the lower throttle plate.
Check this adjustment and see if it helps.

This is from a cold start. Truck started fine....after I replaced the starter for the third time, but I had to pump the gas a couple of times to get her to fire. Yesterday I drove it out to a muffler shop to get pipes put on it. The drive was about 10-12 miles and by the end it was still idling at 1500rpm. Never kicked down. I've been battling the choke which wasn't installed correctly from the re-builder and I'm sure it needs some fine tuning so that may be part of my starting problem but this thing has never wanted to come off the high step. I have been able to manually release it and get it to idle but that doesn't do me any good driving. I'll have to wait until I get it back from the muffler shop to try your suggestions.

I would find one of them old school small garages with a mechanic over 40,Or anyone that drag races or circle track should be able to tune the carb for you.

That sounds like a linkage problem now.Get on the net and find a parts breakdown diagram and check your parts location.
When warmed up,you should be able to "goose" the throttle to make it idle down.

So am I! It's just been 25 years since I last tinkered with one.

I asked the guys at the muffler shop to take a look at it. If they don't come up with anything, I'll ask a buddy of mine who has a bunch of dirt track buddies if maybe he could ask them for help. I've tried goosing the throttle but it does absolutely nothing. Once it's warmed up I can take a screwdriver and bump it down off the high throttle but for whatever reason it won't do it itself. I've got a quadrajet rebuild book coming, that might help too.
