Help with Power brake conversion
I got a complete power brake booster from a 73 GMC and put it on my 74 Chevrolet. It bolted up fine, but when I tried to slide the PB rod onto the brake pedal it wouldnt go. I then looked at the manual master cyl and the hole is bigger on the end. Do I need to get a booster from a 74, or do I need to get a PB pedal assembly? I was going to drill the hole out, but there is not enough material on either side to allow that. I thought this would be a smooth bolt on, but guess not.

I know on my PB rod I could loosen it up and take it off and place on the new one. Can you change them out by just unscrewing the rod itself? Also when you get ready to test it out don't fasten the retaining pin in the brake pedal assembly since you can make your brakes apply sooner or slower by adjusting the length on the same rod. The longer it is the faster the brakes start being applied.

Sounds like you need the rod from the '73. The manual and power rods are different, or am I missunderstanding you? I put an '86 booster on my '73 with no problems.

The 73 booster rod does not have a hole large enough to fit onto the 74 brake pedal "attach point."

I understand the brake attch point part but the 74 won't screw on like the 73 did? Or did the 73 not have it where you can adjust the linkage out?

My 74 has manual brakes and there is no adjustment like the power booter from the 73. Maybe the later boosters have a larger hole in the rod. The length isn't a problem right now. Thanks, Keith |
