Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
So, ive been building/driving a 70 GMC for a while now.
Which is great and all, but its not exactly what i would call a daily driver. so- I have an idea. New England is full of rust, so thats out. I found a truck on craigslist in NC. http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1jf0huh5.jpg leaving tomorrow on a jet plane... wish me luck! I hope to make it back by Thursday night, but who knows. I have a friend on the way to help break the trip up. |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
She's a beauty and Cooper makes great tires! Be careful on your trip.

Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Looks like a nice find. Definitely cleaner than anything you would fine in the New England states.

Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
I'm very jealous! Been looking for same rig for a while & I just got back from NC a month ago. Can't find one in NY either. I'll be with my 86 step side for a while lol. Congrats! If you don't mind, what did u scoop it up for?

Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Thanks everyone! This place is great, I haven't been very active the last few years but my other truck has been working well, and getting lots of odds and ends finished up.
So far I made it to the dc area tonight to visit some family and sleep. Long day... Left for my flight this am at 545, just got to DC a few min ago. The gentleman I bought the truck from could not have been any nicer. And the truck has been working well. Little things to figure out, and plenty of time to think about what I want to do! Overall the truck is in really good shape. It's been re-sprayed at some point, but all the metal work looks original, and hopefully not much bondo under it. It looks good enough for me to enjoy as-is for a while. The plan is to be my daily/work truck. More on all that later- got a few pictures http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/...s6kbl6ccs.jpeg Hit a few really good rain/lightning storms http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/...so0d8ftsa.jpeg Did this a few times http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/...sfprldxyq.jpeg Home stretch tomorrow! Time for sleep |

Very cool Crew Cab. Have a safe trip!!!

Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Looks really good, nice find! I sure wish my 88' Crew was in that kind of shape. The PPO (previous, previous owner), ROLLED on some nasty red primer stuff over the factory paint without any prep work being done. It's all peeling and chipping off now. Therefore, I am jealous of your paint!
If you don't mind me asking, what size are those tires? I've got the same wheels, but I have the factory skinny 235/85/16 on them. Those tires look really nice on there. |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Got back home this evening, truck ran with out any major problems. A few vibrations and noises to chase down.
I'll check on the tire size tomorrow, I'm a bit sleepy right now. Going to get it registered tomorrow, can't wait to drive it more! |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
I think I looked at buying that same truck a few years ago. In the Jacksonville Nc area. I liked it, just didn't have the cash at the time.

Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
That's the one. Currently waiting at the dmv for registration.
Can't wait to put her to work! |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Awesome find! What's the drivetrain in it? I pulled a 454 th400 out of a truck just like that last year. Wish I could have got to it before he had started parting it out.
|
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
350/th400
got a weird rattle/clunk coming from the tranny while in park/drive at idle, only with the ac on. I have a spare converter and im gonna pick up a flexplate and see what I find. |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
I bought a 84 C20 a few years back for a hundred bucks cuz the tranny made horrible noises in Park.
Turned out the flex plate bolts were loose, and the truck was great for a number of years after that! Hope yours is that simple. Nice truck! |
Re: Roadtrip! picking up an 87 Crew Cab
Re-sealing the steering box tonight, i was leaving my mark everywhere...
forgot to mention the tire size is 285/75R16 hopefully I will get the box back in tomorrow morning, and one leak can get crossed off the list. |
