1968 k20 Suburban PTO
 

I just picked up a 68 k20 and I'm looking for some insight on the PTO application. I was told by the previous owner that it used to have a PTO drive. I believe this to be true because there is still a PTO lever inside the cab that has linkage hanging right next to the transmission. With that said, not only do I not have (but do want) the PTO unit, I also don't know why this suburban would have had it. If anyone knows where I can find a PTO unit that will mount to the transmission (CH465) that would be a great start. As well as applications and a diagram as to how it would be hooked up. I know it would likely be for a winch but I'm curious to know if it has other uses. Any pictures of member's current PTO setups are greatly appreciated!!

GM used the SM420 in 68 but may have switched to the SM465 later in the year, or yours may have been swapped. I'd check to see if the PTOs are the same, or if you actually have the 465.

What do you plan to run off the PTO?
I've heard people run AC compressors converted to air compressors, and running hydraulic pumps to run hydraulic motors. Have a look at old advertising for postwar Jeeps. They were marketed as farm implements and could run (snow and field) plows, augers, trenchers, etc. The military ran generators where the passenger seat would be to start jets as I recall.

I have 12k PTO winch in the garage that I had to have for no reason... Its too heavy to lift and no one seems to want it.
