running rich of passenger side
got her (2001 5.3) fired up after running a few minutes she started to run rough black smoke out the right side. well a buddy of mine pointed out my MAF sensor was backwards so I flipped it around pulled the passenger side plugs and they were all covered in black soot. cleaned them off and fired it back up ran fine for a few minutes then same problem again. I have brand new o2 sensors (front only I have no smog so no cats) so Im pulled the 02sensors cleaned them up (didn't look bad) and I'm putting new spark plugs on the passenger side(drivers side looked fine) if it doesn't work any suggestions? thanx

Re: running rich of passenger side
Codes being thrown? Misfires, rich codes, etc?
Stuck injectors can be common if the truck sat at all or the injectors hadn't been used. Is the smoke only out of the one side, and does it smell rich like fuel, or does it have another smell (oil, coolant, carbon, sweet?). |
Re: running rich of passenger side
Only the passenger side is doing it. No codes came up. We ran some fancy tester that told us how a percentage on each bank.im sorry I'm new to this computer stuff on motors doesn't smell sweet but alot of black soot coming out

Re: running rich of passenger side
Ran new plugs same BS. Only on the passenger side. I swap the o2 around just in case so I know its not that. Would one bad coil make the side run rich? 2-8 are covered in black soot. Also notice when I put it in gear it idles really rough

Re: running rich of passenger side
yes I did. but I screwed up royally by listening to a oreillys worker LOL I used the old intake gasket's. so I'm going to pull the intake off tonight and my buddy (he works on these motors) is going to come by and inspect it before I put it back on

Re: running rich of passenger side
pulled the intake this morning everything look fine no signs of leaks. after work today going to put the new intake gaskets and go from there. wondering if my coils are getting enough power. I tried calling the guy who did my harness but he hasn't called me back. fun fun fun

Re: running rich of passenger side
Im no expert on this but like stated..sounds like o2 sensor information breakdown..you said you swapped o2 sensors side to side said you had a guy do your harness you might need to check the plug and wiring..on my harness I had a couple wires"back out of a plug"..I reseated them and all was fine
|
Re: running rich of passenger side
i'll try that any info helps. is there a left and right o2 sensor?
|
Re: running rich of passenger side
Mine are the same left and right..they may be different front to back if you have four but I'm only running one on each side..
|
Re: running rich of passenger side
It's worth a quick check to make sure that you didn't swap the o2 connectors side for side (i.e. plug the left side connector into the right 02 and the right side connector into the left 02). That will cause one bank to run extremely rich and the other to run lean. Reseting fuel trims (either by disconnecting the battery or via a scanner) will result in smooth running for a few seconds, but it will quickly drift back to running rough.

Re: running rich of passenger side
Dayj beat me to it..that was my next thought..the harness is dedicated left and right..

Re: running rich of passenger side
I'm going to have a fun evening :) I'm going to reinstall the intake then i'll switch the o2 lines. I'm praying and crossing my fingers that's it. thing is killing me. thanx for the info guys

if the o2 wire for the right side is going to the left side the computer will fight it |

Re: running rich of passenger side
New problem. Fan 1 is kicking on no problem but fan 2 is causing the relay to click. Can I just wire both grounds to fan 1?
