71 K10 Disc Brake Kit

I've looked and haven't been able to find a front and rear disk brake kit for the 4x4's with stock axles? The axles appear to be GM's and not Dana's from my little experience with these things. Am I missing something, or is it something I'd have to piece together and figure out myself. Searching the board hasn't came up with much either. I know I can get the brake booster setup, but at all four corners is where I'm coming up short on info.

I just got done doing the same thing to my 70 4X4....my first question....does the truck have disk brakes on the front now or drums all the way around?

Drum all the way around - was thinking this was stock, but now I'm not sure for a 71

Call Travis at AZ Pro Performance. He can hook you up. That's where I bought all my stuff from. My truck had a front axle that had disk breaks on it though. Rear was a full conversion, and front was all upgraded to big disk.

They also have a web site.

You can swap a front axle from a 73-87 truck which has disc brakes,Some have swaped disc from the same truck on theirs tho.

The 71 would have disc from the factory. 1970 was the only year for drums and open knuckle on the front. 69 and earlier had drums and closed knuckles. Like was said, you can swap a front axle from any straight axle GM into your truck. The big difference will be the split from standard to metric with the 10 bolts for the banjo fitting. You will need new front brake hoses, just be mindful of the calipers you get. The connection at the hard line will be the same, just the banjo fitting is different.

Re: 71 K10 Disc Brake Kit

Looks like I remembered wrong - truck is at a shop for AC work, and it does have front disk brakes. I don't know what made me think drums all the way around except maybe one too many night shifts in a row? I was thinking that I was going to have to find out the gear ratios and start looking for a new front axle.

With the 6" lift, the rubber brake lines look really long, and the extra diameter of the tires can't help with the braking, but I can't get the braking power I'm expecting out of the brakes and certainly don't want to run into someone. I'll give AZ Pro Performance a try when my truck is back home unless anyone else has any suggestions, they look like they know what they're doing. Hoping to keep the 15's, though, so we'll see. Could be my brake booster is bad, but so far I haven't seen anything definitely wrong with the system.

Look in to braided flex lines and maybe a hydro booster for it if you have power steering.

You can walk into any parts store and get the front brakes. Your hoses are long enough now, right? Maybe you have issues with your power brake set-up. I've driven these trucks all my life with 33"-37" rubber, mostly, and never felt my brakes were inadequate. Never had any instances where I couldn't stop just as well as anything newer I've had. These trucks were very well designed and executed, which is the original reason they have been so popular

69 hafton,
Check out my builds for pictures but I did the same thing but with trucks that had closed knuckle drum axles. I changed them out. In Hulk Jr (see link in signature)I installed a 90 suburban gm 10 bolt front axles added a later model power steering gear box and adapter(from Captainfab). Installed a 8" dual diaphragm booster and master cylinder with a disk/drum proportioning valve off ebay(159$). The truck steers and stops better than my 2008... I was amazed on how well it drove.
FYI in the Hulk build(see link below) I installed the captain fab rear disk brake conversion kit. Other than the brackets the parts are all bought over the counter at any parts store (like Special-K said). Check him out he does great work!
Good luck on the build and post some pictures
oh and I bought SS brake lines for my truck (Hulk) with a 4" lift.
Hulk Jr stayed with stock length and rubber.
