Hello - 1970 c-10 short stepside

Hi, I just registered and will need help, lots of help. Picked up ole orange a few days ago. 1970 c-10, 350ci, 350 turbo, 2500 stall, msd distributor, edelbrock 600, comp cam mutha thumps, blah blah. Started off with a bang - elderly owners smoked the wires/alternator the day before I bought it by hooking cables up backwards. I got it running but wire out of alternator to battery was still smoking a little so I shut her down. Wiring advice? Alternator hooked straight into battery positive along with headlight/relay?
