Changing cab mount pads on assembled truck
 

I have no plans to do a frame off restoration on my '62 C10, but would like to replace the squished out cab mount pads. Can this be done by unbolting the mounts and jacking the cab up just enough to change them out?

You wouldn't be the first to do it that way.

Yep just jack up one corner and only do one corner at a time. There's a good chance the nut and bolt will be really rusty and you'll need to use some heat and penatrant oil

I've been looking through a few threads about the cab mounts and it looks like yet another situation where it's hard to find replacement parts made specifically for the 60-62 trucks. I checked a few of the usual sources and am seeing pad kits that are supposed to fit 60-66, but see in the threads here that the 63 and up are different shapes and possibly thicker than the 60-62's used. If I order the 60-62 kit, should it be adaptable to my '62 or will I need to keep searching for the correct pads?

I ordered a set for 60-66 and they were way to tall. They had to be cut down on order to sit at the right height. If they are too thick the pads under your rad support will be to short.

Were they rubber or poly?

What did you use to cut them?

What thickness did you cut them down to?

I wish I could answer your questions but I did not install them. All I know is that they had to be cut. I will try and find out from the guy that installed them the answer to your questions..

The main reason I'm considering changing the body mount pads is because I'm about 80% finished with installing the CPP power steering kit. As has been pointed out in threads about this kit, their mounting plate puts the steering box about an inch high of direct alignment with the OEM steering shaft. I'm hoping fresh pads will lift the body enough to bring this alignment closer to being correct. Any thoughts or experiences with this would be welcome.

I would not recommend doing that. You will then have to raise your radiator support the same height so that all your gaps will be correct and your hood will close correctly. You will also have to raise up your bed so those lines will mach up also. Then your bumpers will seem low. I would install a u-joint coupler in the steering shaft instead. Even after I installed my new mounts and shortened them the bead seams a little to high.

I will try to get you the answers to your previous questions as soon as possible. The guy that installed them is hard to get a hold of some times.

if your cab mounts are squished then it stands that the rest of the trucks insulators are too. install new rad mounts as well. adjust the box to line up.

The cab mounts were rubber and he cut them with a hack saw. The rears did not need to be cut down but he said that the fronts needed to be cut in half. He also needed to buy new bolts because the ones that came with the kit were to short.
