Can anyone guess whats lies beneath?
 

Working on my truck..what looked like a previously re-glued antenna button is seemingly a bit more. It seems like the windshield is de-laminating where the wires go in under the gasket. I also see a small crack in the gasket so maybe some water got in? Just wondering if anyone has been through anything similar and can comment on what may lie beneath the gasket. If I remove the gasket and windshield and its a mess under there then I am out of commission for a while because I cant install a new gasket if I have issues. Anyone have any experience or seen one like it?

My plan was to pull the windshield, prep and paint (crudely) the dash area on the inside of the cab (mostly covered by the pad) because it has some surface rust on it which I wont be able to get to once the pad is installed and easier with the windshield out ( it seemingly needs replacing anyway for the antenna issue). Now I am hesitant to remove the windshield. I know I must do it just trying to limit downtime.

That windshield may be impossible to get out without breaking and doesnt even look worth trying to save...I would contact a good glass shop and make sure they have one and gaskets in stock before you touch it..then pull it out to do whatever your wanting to do, call them and letem put you a new one in..I know on my truck the glass shop broke 5 windshields before they got one in it..

Yeah I figure saving it was not a possibility I am more concerned about the possibility of rust damage beneath the gasket.


Also are the new windshield as good as the old ones or is it better to pull one from a used truck? I called and they are not real expensive new.

Used are likely to be as rough as the one in your truck.

Get the glass with the blue or green shade band.

I think mine was 150 bucks,, so yeah, cheap enough,,.they ate the cost of the ones they broke..my original windshield looked like new and had never been changed according to the previous owner..but when I removed it for paint it broke,, so even if you found a oem glass chances are it would wind up the same...i would only go with new glass...as far as rust, you'll never know til you get there..just hope for the best and prepare for the worst..mine had a small amount of rust on both bottom corners of the glass under the gasket...it was only surface rust so I removed it quickly with a wire brush on a side grinder..then shot it with primer..
