who makes a good fitting dash pad?

I need a black dash pad to finish up my interior and the interior kit I bought was nice except the dash pad cover that you glue on it doesn't fit in the truck.
I am going to try and cut it and see how it looks but I want to do it right and make it look nice.
Who make a good reasonable black dash pad for my 68 Chevy?
Maybe good isn't reasonable but who makes them that fit right!
Thanks
Chad

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

Let's start with what did you buy? Dash pads that I know of don't glue on, they screw and bolt on. I haven't run into any that don't fit.

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

ok lets not worry with what I bought who sells a good one that fits? who do you recommend?
I know they bolt on from behind not "screw on" like you said I know how they work. I bought a cover that glues on to the old crusted one and I will never do that again. It looks great but doesn't fit, it actually came with an entire interior kit I bought everything was nice except the dash cover.
who makes a good reliable one?

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

As Special-K says. It sounds like you have one of the "dash pad covers" that are supposed to glue onto your existing pad. I would say don't even try that, and get a replacement pad that bolts or like the original. There are several vendors on this page that you can get them from, and if you need tech support they do that too. The pad itself shouldn't cost too much, and you'll have a much better result when it's in.

Those plastic stick on dash covers have come a long way over the years but it's still a piece of plastic , try just dashes.com / board vendors or eBay

Actually special K is right they bolt down through the top and screw on the front just under the pad but I would check with dashes direct.com they offer a urethane dash or a padded vinyl dash like the original and they are made here in the good old USA

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

Hopefully someone will answer your question directly, but this may help:

When you check with the vendors, be aware that there are at least two (2) different types of full replacement dash pads and without careful questioning you may not get what you are thinking. Both could be described as "OEM style full replacement dash pad with integrated mounting studs".

1. Vinyl/Naugahyde covered foam with somewhat flexible plastic/fiberglass core (vs metal core of OEM).

2. Solid or semi solid plastic like material (not vinyl covered foam) with texture similar to original, but seems a little thinner and has visible casting seams.

I expect both will fit, but quality, appearance, durability are subjective...

The plastic "stick on" dash cover is called a cover lay , they are a low cost alternative to a replacement dash pad , they come trim to fit and you install them using 100% silicone sealer , they install easy and fast but are just a band aid for a damaged dash pad .

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

Do you still have the original metal pad? If you do grumpy would cut out a nice one to recover that. As for the complete aftermarket pad sorry I can't help you on that.

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

we lost the original after 30 years of waiting to be replaced so I found a bad one and glued a cover on it.
I need a good replacement and would just like a good site to go look at it.
I don't want to hear how junky the skins are I know they are. I know how they mount I just want a site for a good replacement and so far no one has gave me a site to look at. one person mentioned dash.com but that isn't a good website.
anyone have a website and prices? I need a black one? maybe I am wrong but I would like to think other people have bought some and could recommend who they bought from?
Thanks

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

My LMC pad (not cover) fit just fine. It's the wrong shade of blue, so I had to paint/dye it, but it fit nicely.

I think jeffs bowties mentioned a website. I had no problems finding it. The others are just trying to help. If you ask a question you should expect several different responses if you like them or not. That's what make these forums so great.

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

I tried to help but got shot down. You're welcome, it's what I do. Ok, so without saying you got a dash cover which you already know is a P.O.S. Great, now we are past that. Now back to my original comment that they all fit. Why do you need a specific brand or vendor? They all fit. I used an LMC pad for years. I never "bolted" it down (upper edge) but I did "screw" it down (lower edge). it fit fine just like that. Then, after 8 years, I changed colors so I sold it to a very good member here who knows what he is doing. Those have no metal, just fiberglass and they work just fine. I stuck one in I had laying around in the color of choice. I had a N.O.S one but decided to use the aftermarket one, over fiberglass and it is doing just fine. What I have been trying to say is it doesnt even matter. They are all good!

I guess I will ask another question, since op got his answer. Does anyone know which vendor sells the pad with metal insert? Or does it make that much difference metal or fiberglass?

Great question, following...

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

I like to see that a part is made same as OEM, like the ones GMC Paul sells. But, in all honesty, I have used the padded vinyl over fiberglass and they lay straight as an arrow...even when the nuts were never put on the top edge. Was a temporary installation...for 8 years! Just check the site vendor list and buy from who you feel best with after checking their websites out. It's that easy

It's amazing how much information you can find today if you just use any one of the search engines available to us. Just saying....:metal: GMC Paul $69.99 can't go to wrong on that....:metal:

Re: who makes a good fitting dash pad?

TMI Products make some cool ones. Not oem but nice. They have contrast stitching with the fiberglass insert.
