96-99 5.7 vortec?
Is it possible to carb a 96-99 5.7 vortec with just adapter plate for the intake, or does the intake need to be replaced as well?
Will this engine drop in an 84 c10 without changing the motor mounts? Is it possible to mate it to a th350 transmission? Can the front assembly from 96-99 Chevy truck Crossmember/control arms/spindle/tie rods/sway bar bolt up to an 84 c10 frame without major modification or fabrication? What I have on the c10 I want to keep since these parts aren't even a year old. What will I need to do to make that happen? I know the alternator is different. As always thanks in advance for your help/experience. I can get the engine at the junkyard for about $200. |
Re: 96-99 5.7 vortec?
You can keep and reuse everything you have on your list with a Vortec motor. You will have to change the intake as an assembly to a carb conversion intake. I'm doing this exact swap on my truck with a Weiand Street Warrior 8121. It's still a small block Chevy so it will fit any regular SBC transmissions. You will need a 1 piece rear main flexplate though, but that should come with your Vortec engine. Valve covers may or may not swap depending on what bolt pattern you currently have.
Edit: Engine mounts are the same, just reuse the mouths off your '84. You can reuse your alternator/belt drive off the '84 too, but I'd recommend using the serpentine setup off the Vortec as its a much better system than the old v-belts. |
Re: 96-99 5.7 vortec?
Change the intake for carb and timing cover because it has a hole for a crank sensor. Tada, your done. Vortecs are standerd small blocks. No, 88-98 suspension does not bolt onto 73-87's.

Re: 96-99 5.7 vortec?
Don't forget the distributor gear, vortecs have a roller cam, and don't rollers usually require a bronze gear??? I know the vortecs have a different style cap.
Also no spot for a mechanical fuel pump. |

You could leave the timing cover if you don't mind the crank sensor being there. I did find out the hard way that the cover will not allow the use of your stock power steering pump bracket. I went with an aftermarket bracket set up.

And you need a hot cam kit. I bought one years ago, before I was more interested in lsx swaps, and it's still sitting in my basement Incase I get a chance to build my vortec. |
Re: 96-99 5.7 vortec?
Thanks for all the advice guys!
I was asking about the motor mounts because my crossmember has some hairline cracks, and a friend is parting out a 98 truck with drop spindles and springs control arms. I'll have to get the engine at jy on sale day because he's keeping his for his other truck. Anyhoo, when checking jy engine... Try to find a wrecked vehicle, astro van/1500 truck/suburban/tahoe thinking that the vans are probably less worked and worn than the others. Check oil Remove valve covers Turn damper by hand Remove #1 spark to check for compression on tdc Thinking easiest thing is to try to start it, but with remote starter have to sneak battery in as lkq doesn't want you to start them, also if gas tank isn't there how can I start a vortec? Try to remove oil pan or cut some of it out to check the pan for metal shavings. I have a few extras in storage. Came across a 4.3 v6 TBI engine pulled from an '89 s10 would this work in an 84 swb and save gas? |
