Another options for rear AC

I was reading the other AC post and thought this might be another option for some people out there. I might look into one of these units one day.

If I were to use one of these units I would plumb the AC vents into the roof and not put in front AC at all.

Where would you mount the unit itself? Its fairly large and squarish. Just curious to see where your thinking is with this. Could be a good option for some people.

I would mount it in the rear where the spare tire goes. Either on that side or on the opposite side. 11"x16"x11" are the dimensions I believe. That website just shows the marine info, I do believe they make these for non marine applications as well. A friend of mine works at a shop and they put these in conversion vans from time to time.

Did you notice that it is 120vac? Not 12v DC

So would that mean that an inverter would be needed to run this unit?

That would be one REALLY big, EXPENSIVE inverter and lots of batteries and a HIGH output alternator!!!

Let me find out a little more about these. My friend who works at the shop where these are sold should know more than I do. I think the link above is for marine use only. He's told me a few times that they put these in conversion vans so they can't being doing all of that. Stay tuned.

Funny, I looked at something similar to "hide" in the spare wheel well. That one you posted looks huge! On this one, I couldn't think of a way to plum the air duct up to the ceiling. I had visions of running flat or small OD duct up in between the roof and headliner and use vents kind-of like my late model Suburban has. But nothing seems workable -

This is what I found for auto application:

The other issue I see with these units is the cost. They are between $1100 and $1550 each! The vintage air units are around $300. I think it would be real easy to build a REALLY nice cover for them when mounted on the roof. Even if you paid an upholsterer to do the job, it would be less than the cost of these units. I'm not saying these are not viable, just not what I would use.

I would agree on the prices for these kinds-of set-ups. Too much $$ for what I need...which is only a small unit in the rear. There's actually a wide variety of very reasonably priced stand-alone "under dash air conditioner" units on eBay.

And sorry to to hijack this thread - I'll go back to my side of the room :-)

Re: Another options for rear AC

I was just throwing this out there as another options. If I were to ever use one of these setups the benefit to me would be that I would only run this AC/ heat unit. I would not need a seperate front and rear AC this would blow enough cold air to cool the whole truck. Piping the system would be the most challenging thing that I can see.

Please if you have any better solutions or options post them up. Just trying to see whats out there and use what best fits the trucks.

I have worked on the AC system in a 15 passenger E350. The system works very well. I had the idea of striping the whole rear HVAC system from a Ford van (should be plenty in the junk yard ;)) and patching it into a burb. I think the blower is mounted at the floor and all the ducting is plastic.

Just a thought.

Any idea what years? I have thought about trying to use the rear AC from a newer Suburban, but I haven't gotten that far yet
