67-68 stick on trim
 

I've got a 68 swb that is a base model truck. I have a full set of side trim for it that I was considering cleaning up and putting on the truck. I don't really want to drill holes and mount it like they did from the factory. Has anybody tried sticking the trim on with some sort of double sided 3M tape or anything like that where drilling is not required?


Any suggestions and comments are appreciated. Thanks guys. :metal:

I am interested in this as well. Someone filled the holes on mine.

I know some people prefer to glue the emblems on so im sure someone had glued all of it on before.

My memory is hazy, but: my truck is a 1970 and I bought a complete set of the spring loaded trim clips that go in the holes. The bodyshop seemed to use adhesive ones, and if my hazy memory is correct, they came along in 71 or 72.

So I'd look at how the trim was held on in 71-72, as it might have been adhesive from the factory. That or my body shop found something that works but wasn't stock.

67-68's do have some clips and holes. I took the trim off a longbed and will cut it down to fit my shortbed.

I'm sure there has got to be some type of adhesive to do it . I'm interested myself. I'm working on a 68 GMC I want to put the trim on as well.

Anyway, really liking your tire and wheel choice. Can you tell me the rim and tire sizes? Sorry to jump the thread.

I just used the stick on clips on my '71 Cheyenne. Not a big fan...They make the molding stick out a bit from the body so the the molding isn't flush.
Also after a day or two a couple of them came apart and caused an even bigger gap (of course). And I mean they separated from the part that clips to the molding. I'm contemplating removing them and drilling holes to cure the gaps and separation problems.
BTW-I used original not repro molding so it may not have been arrow straight.

Another thought-I used 3M dbl stick tape to put the Cheyenne Emblems back on since I had to break them off to remove. The tape wasn't thick enough so I built it up by using 3-4 layers-worked like a charm. I believe this could also be done to the trim by building it up also. Probable a few 4-5" strips a foot or so apart would work or you could do one continuous long strip the entire length. By carefully building it up to be just a bit thicker than the trim it would be nearly flush.

I had considered putting trim on my 68 but I also would like to avoid drilling holes. I contemplated filling the molding with a hot glue to make a flat surface then applying the double sided tape to it. No idea if it would work. Just a quick idea... and to avoid too much tape to paint contact it could be staggered rather than using 30lbs of hot glue? lol.

I have had all of these thoughts as well, the trim on these trucks looks so good. I have thought about airbrushed. I have seen trim airbrushed on before, if done right looks very good and you cant tell it's airbrushed until you get right up to it.

Take a look towards the inside of your wheel arches and you'll see there are holes there already. The trim that goes over each wheel uses screws to attach there. The wheel arch trim goes over the end of the straight pieces on the bed. You could cut off and grind flat the threaded portion of the trim retaining clips and use 3M double sided tape to stick the clips to your paint. Also check with your local automotive paint supply they might have plastic inserts like the 71-72 trim uses.

My '69 C-10 has the holes already drilled for the trim, but the PO went and used the sticky clips instead. I don't know how long ago the trim was installed using this method, but in the AZ heat, the adhesive is failing and the trim is falling off my truck. Never did care for the extra gap between the body and the trim with the adhesive clips either.

If you're using 3M tape, it can be bought by the large roll at Amazon. The trade name is "VHB". Here's but one example:

When I first saw this thread I though about using "Polymold" - https://www.amazon.com/Polymold-Mold.../dp/B00H3V1GN4

You could fill in the back of the molding enough to put some 3m tape.

If you search google for polymold there are some videos. It is some pretty neat stuff.

If I ever go to take the trim off is 3M tape or polymold going to hurt my paint?

the 3m tape is a real pain to get off but it can be done I'm not sure about the other stuff

I used strips of 3M tape to hold on my hubcaps on my Tacoma and they are still on there and it's been a year. Pretty impressed so far. Lots of off-roading.

The polymold is just plastic. I believe it is HDPE like a milk jug.

I actually wonder if it would stay in the trim without some type of adhesive. I also wonder how well adhesive would stick to it. I have a chunk of it somewhere around the house. I'll try to see if adhesives stick to it.
