New Heads and Intake, install help.
1 Attachment(s)
My Dad had a cracked head. Called Summit. They sent him these Vortec ones.
Cool, but didn't know about the different angles. So the intake now doesn't fit. He calls Summit again, they sold him this Edelbrock 2V Sportsman. Anyone have a sequence for install? Torque specs? Use sealer on gaskets? Instructions say water ports only? But there's only 8 bolts holding it on? Any help you can offer would be awesome. Dad's in no rush. Weather's great and his Bike is primary transportation. Cheers! |
Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Sorry....that post was rushed as I was at my Dad's place and using my phone.
I've better pics and more info coming from him tomorrow. I'm looking at the intake and thinking "Why did they talk him into that?" I know it's better flow, but where's the vacuum ports? He's a DualJet? Can you pull good vacuum for Tranny & Brakes from it's main vacuum at the base? Ah? I'm lost. More info tomorrow. Cheers! |
Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Make sure you get the right intake gaskets. They will have o-rings around the intake ports and snap into a hole in the head. Run a 1/4" bead at the lifter valley ends. Needs to seal between the intake and valley wall of the block. Find your torque specs for the intake bolts. Easy to install.

Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
I hear good things about the Vortec heads. My 98 has the 350 Vortec engine, and it's no slouch. Makes more power than my 69 350 4bbl.
Once you get this together, you'll know it was worth the mental effort. |
Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Those are not vortec heads. Those are TBI heads. They were found on small blocks between 87-95. The only angle that is different is the two center holes on each side. You can make your current intake work on there no problem. Just do a search on center intake bolt holes for small block Chevy. Or search maybe slotting for center bolts. You can find the info and it not much more than making [or buying ]some little angle brackets to put under the bolt and drilling a 90 degree hole on the intake. It has been done millions of times. Or you could buy a intake off E-bay or some place like that that has the center intake holes to fit the 87-95 heads for less than a hundred bucks. The cost of me doing my first one was $14 bucks I think. I have done it several time myself. I had a dual quad intake that had two throttle bodies on it that I had on a small block in a S-10 years ago.

The way I know is the Vortec heads have only bolt holes in the corners. In case your wondering how I knew that.

I'm lost. I'll probably make a better post tomorrow and drop the link to it here. Lots going on for me tomorrow....ordering siding, j-channel, etc for the house. Just trying to help out my Dad too. Summit talked him in way deeper than his needs! He's a Harley and a Kawa Trike. The truck is for iced roads. No joke. The Old Man rode all last year with Ohio's mellow winter! 👍 |
Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Why are the rocker arm nuts cranked down so far?

Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Looks like they have been re-drilled for a vortec intake. They should work ok but vortecs are a lot better. Personally I wouldn't waste my time on them though.
Vortec heads should have a single hump (906) or a saw tooth pattern (062). What's the casting number on yours? |
Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Might want to ask your dad about his intake choice. If it is the victor 2v intake I am thinking of, that is a high rpm intake. Something like 3000-7000 rpm range.
What ever intake you use, don't go cheap on the gaskets and bolts. Especially on the vortec. I have good luck with Fel-Pro gaskets and APR bolts. |

Re: New Heads and Intake, install help.
Ignore my post above. I looked at the pic again and saw the double pattern for the intake. That means he can use what ever type of intake he wants or has on hand and it will bolt up fine. Sorry I didn't pay better attention but it was late [for me ] last night. Jim
