Hidden spare + no cab tank + 20 gallon capacity = reality?

Is there any way to get rid of the cab tank and still carry a spare? I don't care if it's a full size spare or not. Just something to get me home.

I've thought about putting a donut spare behind the seat. Not sure how to fasten it down so it doesn't roll around back there.

Sure! Just throw it in your bed, easy-peasy.

If you have a five bolt, grab a donut and mounting hardware from a 91-96 Caprice/Roadmaster. 5x5 bolt pattern. Don't run it on the rear if you have posi.

I'm going to put a rear mount tank in mine and was thinking donut spare behind seat. Thanks for the info on which car the right donut is in.

50% of the problem was solved many years ago by the auto industry.

The other 50% is routinely solved by members here by moving the tank to under the bed or a fuel cell at the head of the bed.

Here is a pic of the hidden spare.

Hidden under a cover.

I suspect you aren't a stepside guy, so yes, you have a challenge.

How about a custom-made fuel tank, which surrounds the driveshaft forward of the rear axle. This would give you more security from a rear ending and allow easy access to your spare which will be close the the rear bumper and "hidden" under the bed.

I heard that a donut from an Astro van will fit as well.

Get AAA. Call if you have a flat or breakdown.

Would a donut fit next to the frame in front of the wheel well? You'd have to fabricate a bracket, but it might work.

where do you put it? That is the question. I can't see any tire fitting behind the seat where the tank that took the spare's space was.

That's what a friend of mine does. Granted he has waited 45 minutes for a wrecker to arrive while I have had 5 flats over the course of 25 years and none took me longer than 10 minutes to change.

Not a bad idea! Doesn't extend past your wheel well and doesn't stand taller than you beside. :bann:

...as the OP... What I was looking for was to free up room in the cab. I'd rather have speakers back there than a gas tank or a tire.

That's a full size tire and it can fit under the lip of the bed but doesn't stick out the bottom. Totally hidden from the passenger side view and a tonneau cover can still go over it. This still may happen this winter on mine.

How about move the fuel tank to where more modern trucks have theres, an then keep the spare stock.

If the shaft breaks, it could go boom

How about what Yugo did in 1985?

You fab guys could fabricate a cup-shaped holder for this spare tire, one that allowed water to drain out the bottom. I think Suburbans had something like that, to hold the spare in the back of the vehicle.

That's funny. I don't know if I would trust a tire that I baked several hundred times.

Why would your tire be "baked?" Are you talking about if put behind the seat?

I think by "baked" he means getting the tire hot in the engine compartment over and over gain. In reference to the YUGO picture.
