Good Afternoon. Just bought my dream truck last week-- 1972 Cheyenne Super Custom SB 4x4, in fairly good shape. Rebuilt motor, mostly stock parts, dash never cut etc. It's got a few quirks and issues that I will likely ask for help with, but just wanted to introduce myself. Pardon my sounding like a dumba$$ as I owned an old K5 10 or so years ago, but haven't worked on anything since.

I'm a former Marine who loves to hunt and fish.

Here are some of the issues I hope to tackle in the near future:

1. Motor temp creeps up to 220-230 when idling and hot out (newer aftermarket alum radiator and metal fan, but still has tendency to get hot--ok when driving)
2. AC blows but not cold
3. Engine knock/timing issue after shutting truck off
4. Starter malfunction (i believe due to overheating) after running truck for a while (starts perfectly when truck is cold, turns over 4-8 times before start when hot)
5. Cosmetic fixes for the worn looking paneling on tailgate/worn wood
6. Possible axle/gear swap/possible small lift


Anyway--look forward to getting into this thing--here are a few pictures.

Very nice looking truck! Lots of helpful folks here and hopefully all your questions can be answered. Search function can help too, plenty of threads with good info.

welcome aboard! nice Cheyenne Super you have there, and in one of the most desirable configs too - a swb K10!

#1 - recommend go back to properly sized factory clutch fan
#3 - check dieseling solenoid on the carb and ensure initial timing properly set.
#4 - put the half-soup can shield between starter and the block. Don't see any, but no headers, correct?
#6 - what gear ratio are you seeking? Probably have a pretty decent one from the factory for the K10 with big tires added. Might be easier to add an o/d trans than swap both gearsets.

Welcome to the forum, that is a nice truck. I agree with Jocko i would definitely check the timing. If it is to far advanced it could cause the issues you are describing, also probably could check the thermostat it could be sticking open and not allowing the coolant to cool properly.I was just noticing the shroud is setting pretty far from the radiator you could be pulling to much air around the radiator and not through it at idle is when you would notice the temp but driving the air is forced through the radiator.

Everything you describe expect the worn looking tailgate could be traced to the timing being too high. Awesome looking truck and welcome to you from Arkansas. Thank you so much for your service to or country. It is guys like you that keep it where we can do stuff like this.

You say it has a metal fan -- can you be more specific? Maybe post a pic?

That is my idea of the perfect stance for these trucks. No go on the lift for me, but to each their own.

Can you tell us a little more about how you found the truck? how long had you been looking? Did it come from Ca? How much did you give?

That's a sweet truck, nice options, and great condition. Hope the suggestions above help sort out the issues, which actually seem minor.

Welcome to the board and nice rig. I had a similar one a while back - just an opinion, but I added a 2.5" lift and wished I hadn't. Looks great as is, personally, but of course it is yours to modify at will! :) Look forward to seeing more of your truck!

Should I just search for OEM clutch fans and R&R? I have zero experience with timing stuff, so I may have to take her in for that, but it sounds like that may be my biggest issue. What have you used for shield material? And if I swapped out the starter for a high torque new one, would I experience the same issue you think? I didn't even think about the o/d trans...

Found the truck on CL and it has lived in CA it's whole life. Original owner in Redding area, then bought about 8 years ago and lived in the Yosemite area. I will likely keep it as stock as possible, adding intake, maybe upgrade the exhaust (dual glasspacks right now, which sound great, but would like a more throaty sound), and possibly stereo/speakers but don't want to cut on the dash.

In short, an 18", 7-blade fan on a good heavy-duty thermal clutch should do the trick -- and should be what your K10 came with from the factory.

Oh man, that's a nice interior! Mine's the same color (minus the woodgrain) but looks like it's a hundred years older.... :lol:

Everything about that fan & shroud looks right to me. Only question would be the condition of the fan clutch.
