Hood glowing red hot
 

A good solid 35 years ago when these trucks were current and I was a little kid, my grandpa borrowed my Dad's 68 GMC 910 to drive down to North Dakota from Saskatchewan to pick up something or another.

About 8PM that night we get a call from grandpa who is pretty worked up that the engine is so hot that the HOOD is glowing RED HOT.

After some back and forth debugging and troubleshooting, it was determined that Grandpa had never driven a truck with roof lights before!

Apparently just around dusk the glow from the roof lights casts onto the hood with their orange bulbs and makes it looks like it's "glowing".

Almost forgot about that one! Haven't driven my truck at night yet, actually...

that reminded me of one night driving through downtown Houston. I noticed a spot on my hood was glowing red. I stopped and opened the hood. my battery had somehow come loose and was touching the hood. car died and I quickly knocked the battery back in place. for some reason it started back up but there was a round red rusty spot on the hood from then on. this was a rusty old 65 chevelle my first car.

the first time i drove at night it was just getting dark and as i rounded a corner and drove intothe dark shadow of a mountain I had a whathe? moment and then an aha moment roof lights.I told the previous owner boy he got a real kick out of it.I noticed a lot of guys stay in touch with previous owner

I had a time when I was working my 69 in the field pulling wagons to the elevator and late at night, nice an dark, I popped open the hood and the headers were bright cherry red!

I also would do that to check to make sure my plug wires were OK still. If I couldn't see them arcing, they were OK.

One time, summer of '76, me and a friend were out cruising around late at night, probably having a few beers, and we noticed a fire burning way up a canyon. We went and called the fire warden, got him out of bed (probably closer to early morning than late at night) and he came and met us and we showed him the fire. He got out his binoculars and checked it out and sure enough, he says, so we all get in his truck and start up the canyon. We hadn't gone a hundred yards and went around a corner and onto a drilling location where someone had left the roof lights on on a water truck!:lol::lol::lol:

We all had a good laugh over that. That water truck was parked in such a way that we could see one light, then the 3 in the center kinda blurred together. It looked amazingly like a fire in the distance.

I plan to use a clearance lamp cab on my '72 when I restore it. I'll make sure to line my hood with an asbestos-like fireproof material to prevent the hood from getting red hot!
