ATHS Tri-State Show '16

I didn't get as many pictures as I usually do. I think there were a little over 300 trucks entered. This show is in Coldbrook, VA at the Ruritan Club fair grounds along US11 just north of Winchester. I got there Saturday morning, left for the evening in the '72 to drift on down to Watermellon Park outside of Berryville, VA along the Shenandoah River for "The Watermellon Festival". That is 3-days of bluegrass and mountain folk. We listened to some great music till late, then headed back to the RV at the faitgrounds. Always a great weekend.

Pickups to semis to snow blowers...no judging. Just bring them out for people to see.

More great pictures of some great old trucks.

I bet that giant Snow-Blower is Detroit powered.

I think it was. One of the best industrial engines of all times. That one whole line of modest medium duty trucks belongs to one guy. I think they said he brought or has 33! He brought most if not all

You might like this oversized pickup. I like a working truck, but once they are a novelty I guess this would be just right for rolling into antique truck shows. It needs a custom slide-in camper!

I'm glad they are appreciated. You just won't see a lot of this stuff anywhere but at these shows. When you see them it's as if you just saw one yesterday. The old trucks lasted so much longer than cars.

The ATHS National Convention was at York, PA last year and the Mason-Dixon chapter was one of the host chapters. The word got out on our show a lot and I think this year saw more trucks from points farther out. I think this was the 13th year now. It's a great location being off of I-81, not far south of I-70 and not real far north of I-64.

The fella in front of the green KW pusher was receiving a lifetime achievement award.

Boy I am in the WRONG place for being a banjo player! The pickin's up around here are scarce. Been wanting to head south for some of the big bluegrass festivals...

Great trucks too by the way. That wedge body ramp truck is pretty neat. There's an old time drag that happens here every summer, a Jimmy showed up just like it hauling a Chevy.

What a great combo! I talked to the owner of the red truck just as he was leaving. He owns a body shop in the general area and boy did he do a sweet job on that one? He said he bought it there at the show last year. It's an original low-mile big block that purred like a kitten. Unbelievably quiet standing their talking with it running.

Yeah, the farther south from here the more pickin' you'll hear. Hey, could be a good line for a song! We have festivals all around here as well. Up where my mom lives in Friendsville, MD they have had a fiddler's contest for as long as I remember, yet I never talk to anyone who has heard of it. Actually, it's a fiddle & banjo contest.

I hadn't been to a big bluegrass show like this for a long time. What I noticed is these days many banjo players are getting back into the roots sound of claw hammer style. I came up with it in the '70s and it was all about Scruggs style. The Connor Family Band was fantastic! David Grisman came on a couple groups later with his latest Sextet. His dawg music is a step away from bluegrass for sure. Basically, it was an acoustic string instrument festive, primarily bluegrass.

Thanks for sharing the photos with us. That looks like a great show, I wish I wasn't so far away. I love those old Mack trucks, the styling was great back then.

I'm glad you all like the pictures. I enjoy sharing for those who don't get to go. You can check out www.aths.org/CalenderEvents for chapter shows closer to you. I guess there are other combined chapter shows as well. The national show moves to a different part of the country each year. Last year was York, PA which is real close to me, so I got to go. Over 1,000 trucks! This year was in Salem, Oregon and next year will be Des Moines, IA.

That red car hauler was clean as can be, and smooth running. It had red Line-X on the deck. Very very nice truck

Tim, Have you ever been to the Old Fiddler's Convention in Galax, VA?

Re: ATHS Tri-State Show '16

Yes, but not since maybe as far back as the '70s. That's the big one. My friend Chuck has been going. His girlfriend since his wife ran off plays guitar and sings, he has gotten back into his fiddlin' and they go to a lot of bluegrass events. I used to go all over to those and not sure why I stopped, other than my X always had what she wanted to do. I was there at the Watermelon Festival asking myself why it had been so long. I sure did enjoy myself. Not just hearing the music, but seeing all the good people so happy and friendly...just as I remembered it years ago. I'll have to get down to Galax for that. That's the kind of stuff I want to do once I get my '67 finished (if it's before I die).
