So another forum I'm on for Vettes has a thread titled "Show us your NO or LOW COST HOME MADE do it yourself stuff C3 CORVEtte" and I thought there ought to be something similar in every forum so I bring it here asking everyone to post their favorite DIY solutions/inventions

I put a switch on my dash that, when in the ON position, runs the cab clearance and marker lights. When I turn the key off, they go off. That way I don't forget and kill the battery, but can drive around with my clearance lights on.
I have to add a diode, as backflow will keep the truck running if you have the headlights on! |

Cool thread, it ought to be a sticky! What I'm aiming for here is more about showing off things you've made for your truck (homemade gauge clusters, light setups, custom filler necks, etc.) rather than tricks of the trade.

When I installed an electric fuel pump for my carbed Vortec engine I added a switch (push button) in parallel to the oil pressure switch so that if the psi switch ever failed or the truck ran dry I could manually operate the pump. I bought a DC push button switch at Lowe's. It was rated for 12v and way more amps than necessary to trigger the pump relay. It's installed down by my manual choke.

When I built my 69 Chevy K10, (33 years ago) It had enough lift on it that I had a hard time reaching the dipstick to check the oil without getting my clothes dirty from leaning on the truck.
I pulled a dipstick and tube from a mid-70's Chevy Van that came all the way to the front of the hood, just behind the radiator support. This way I could pop the hood, raise it about 12", reach in and check the oil without getting dirty. The dipstick was about 3-1/2 ft long. The handle was just to the rear of the left corner of the radiator. I have Polaroid pics in a box from lots of years ago....... Don't know where those are...... |

1969 K20 - It had the stock 2 leaf front springs (negative arch). I bought a set of 3 leaf springs from an '83 K20 for $20 bucks off Craigslist. I cut the long 2nd leaf spring down to the correct length and slid it under the stock main spring, after taking out the stock 2nd leaf, to make a low buck 3 leaf pack. Gave me about a 1 inch lift. Used a 2 inch block I had laying around in the rear in place of the stock 1 inch block to level it out. Ride is a little firmer, less bouncy.

I used an old voltage regulator and heater fan resistor to slow my electric fuel pump down so it wouldn't make so much noise. I gutted the regulator box, drilled holes in it for ventilation, mounted the resistor inside, wired it inline to the fuel pump, and mounted it on the inner fender well in a place so that my radiator fan blows air across it.
