Fuel Tank Sender Job Done!

2 Attachment(s)
Got tired of looking at my fuel gauge reading EMPTY. I thought I might slide into a deep depression LOL.

So, today, I sprayed a little PB Blaster around the locking collar, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then used a small brass drift and a hammer to turn the collar. Of course, I disconnected the fuel line first.

Took the cruddy unit into the shop, and found that the float was full of gas. There was a small crack in the float, so I squeezed the float to open the crack, and drained the gas out. Sanded the area thoroughly, then used flux and a large electric soldering iron to make the repair.

While I had it out, I used electronics cleaner to clean up the variable resistor, checked it out with an ohm meter, then cleaned everything up.

The sock was in surprisingly good shape, just dirty, so I cleaned it with Acetone and an old toothbrush.

Put it back in the truck, with some silicone grease on the O-Ring. The gauge now read about 1/8th full. Put 20 bucks in, and it went a bit over the half mark. Drove for a while, then filled it up, and it went above the full mark, so I'm very happy with the result.

If I can do this, anybody can do it!

Well that is neat! Thanks.

I replaced my fuel sender with one from Tucker's. We'll see if I have to do this same thing.

My float was destroyed from have sat for years with a small amount of gas still in it. I purchased a float from summit racing . I believe itso a float from a 70's jeep but it's plastic which I was told holds up better with today's fuel. I'll post the part number later if anyone is interested in think it was around $5

Re: Fuel Tank Sender Job Done!

My preference was to get a new assembly, or at least a new float and sock, but I was curious, and once I had it apart, I couldn't see the point of putting it back in the tank without at least trying to get it to work.

Have no idea how long it will last, but at least I know that if it goes again, it is a piece of cake to put in a new unit, and in the meantime, I have a working gauge.

Free self fixes are sometimes more rewarding than a new part :)

That would be a help, thank you.

I enjoy self fixes too: the satisfaction is great and new skills/processes are learned.

Now you know when NOT to corner right too fast and spill gas out the gas cap!

That fuel sloshing out the filler is a real pain if you like to keep the body looking nice. I've tried two filler caps, and fuel loves to pour out on right turns.

Has anybody ever come up with a fix for this? I really don't want to run with low fuel all the time, and it does not take a hard right turn to make the fuel slosh, just any sort of right turn.

Back when I ran the cab tank I put extra rubber gasket material inside the cap to make it lock down better.:chevy:
