Re: Auto trans fly wheel size starter fitment ??
You should have a 168 tooth flex plate. The one in you picture is not that.

Upon further research. The diameter is 14.13 (14 1/8) inches, so the size is correct. The starter you have in the picture has the wrong nose cone, assuming it's the original block, and trans. Go back to the store and have them show you what they have for the "correct" starter

Jess, Starters with a "straight across" bolt pattern use a 153 tooth flexplate, Starters with a "diagonal" bolt pattern use a 168 tooth flexplate, it appear you have the straight across pattern starter with a 168 tooth flexplate. The simplest thing would be to go back to the parts store and ask for a starter for a T400

Priceless info here ~ IIRC (possible) the straight across starter uses a nine tooth Bendix . (?) My '69 C/10's 250 i6 has the straight across starter and when I tried to buy a rebuilt it didn't work so I wound up buying a good Junk Yard starter 5 minutes before the Yard closed and marrying parts on the side walk two towns away to make it work . The Ring Gear has damaged teeth (from DPO's failure to shim the starter I *think*) so I need to buy a new flex plate . |
