What do you think about this bumper?

I live out in the country with a lot of wildlife and it's just a matter of time before I'll run into a critter and total out my vehicle. I found this bumper and was wondering if it would prevent damage in the case of hitting a wild hog or deer at 75 mph.

Depends what gauge metal it is but at 75mph no bumper is gonna help hitting a deer or hog.

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

Yes it would help (maybe a lot!). As far as how much help depends on many variables like angle, speed and size of the critter.

Looks like someone combined an old Warn winch bumper with a CUCV grille guard. I like it.

Here's another view of it. Need something strong enough to prevent major front end damage from hitting a buck.

it would help but youd still have damage like another poster said depending on the fancy mathematics of the situation

It would help a good bit at half that speed. Anything hit as big as you mention at 75 is gonna ruin your day. All you really need is dual chrome deer whistles ;)

If you add a triangular brace, that reaches all the way to the top, to the sides of the upper guard it'll reduce the tendency to bend into the front of the truck.

In the end... At 75mph a deer is going to make your day unpleasant.

Most eggheads say the whistles don't do much. http://www.cartalk.com/blogs/wolves-dont-whistle Too bad. Nice and simple.

All that energy get transferred to the frame, if the connectors don't fail. If the structure, ie frame, doesn't crush to absorb the energy, you the occupant is in for a rough ride. I'd suggest a broken sternum at best. JMMV

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

A 150 lb deer or 200 lb feral hog is not an immovable object. The truck will not slow enough to transfer that much energy to the occupant.

The stiffer and more impact resistant the bumper the more damage the frame and bumper mounts will be forced to absorb. There are crumple zones in Pickup truck frames and you may damage them in your quest to save the front body panels.

Locomotive "cow catchers" are designed to push an animal around the side of the vehicle. It'll look like something out of Mad Max. That may attract the attention of Law Enforcement.

This. Would you rather replace some easily bolted on sheet metal and trim, or replace your frame?

Id run it. It looks pretty tuff chances are it will help at lower speeds but like many said 70mph into a deer is gona suck no matter what not much you can do. But chances are it you hit something hard enough to bend your frame it would probably bend with a stock bumper as well

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

Unless your truck is way lifted, the heavy part of most deer will be above the heavy part of that or most bumpers. Should be very helpful against smaller hogs since their body mass is closer to the ground. Against Monster Boss Hog, just plan on a bad day.

That said, it should prevent some damage as any energy spent bending that bumper is energy not spent bending the sheet metal behind it. At 75mph, the better question is will it increase your chances of survival so you can worry about damage to the truck.

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

not just the front of yer truck you have to worry about!
me & my dad hit a deer couple yrs ago, straight on. smashed the grill & dr headlight assembly, bent up the hood a bit too.
the REAL damage started when it bounced down the side of the truck....
dented the front fender, hit the door hard enough to bend & jam it shut (never found the mirror...) put a massive dent almost all the way to the frame at the front of the box, then as it departed it hooked the step bumper and bent it into an almost perfect 90 degree....not to mention the fur & gore stuck all over the truck...

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

Alternately, I could build a tube bumper similar to this. Think I would build it so it doesn't protrude out so far. I would think this design would be stronger than the Warn aftermarket bumper.

The problem with everyone that wants to build these insanely tough, or solid bumpers to prevent damage to their truck, aren't taking into account that when you do add a bumper like this to your vehicle, it no longer absorbs impacts with solid objects, it now transfers impacts. Being that these bumpers are bolted solidly to the frame, the frame now absorbs the impact, damaging it and often totalling the truck, versus a stock bumper and easily replaceable sheet metal can and are designed to absorb the impact better. While still damaged, at least the truck would usually be savable.

Re: What do you think about this bumper?

From what I have seen, most vehicle/deer impacts are more like glancing blows. Surprisingly, many deer actually run away from a crash, at least for a short distance. If the deer is struck by one of the front fenders, it will tend to fly off to the side. So, in the case of a non-head on crash, I think a sturdier bumper might assist in the flinging away of the deer, rather than being caught on the bumper and/or fender.

Of course, if the deer is in the process of leaping at the time of impact, it doesn't much matter what type of bumper you have because it will be flying through your windshield anyway.

This bumper looks even stronger. It's for sale in my area but they want more money than a used front end clip.

I worked at a salvage yard several years ago, I've seen as many as 6 deer whistles on the front of mashed up vehicles with blood and deer hair all over them.
