Side locker tool box

I've be changed jobs and don't have the same space for tool storage that I used to have . I had to downsize my tool cart from the monster 36x24 to a 18x24 and a bunch of my stuff has to go back in my actual tool box. Because of this I need somewhere to store a bunch of stuff that's in plastic boxes. I have decided a 5' tall 18" square side locker with shelves is th best option. I priced them from SnapOn to match my KRA 5319 and KRA 5208 pair. Talk about scary cost. The other option is to upgrade to a KRL722 but that would cost another $3500 after trade in.

Therefore I'm thinking of building a side locker. I'll call the local steel supplier Monday and get prices but my plan is to use 18 gauge sheet steel with 1/8" 1x1 angle steel for the corners. I'll possibly make the framework from angle steel then attach the sheet to the frame.

Any feedback either good or bad?

I think building a side locker is a great idea....is that the alternative to the $3,500 Snapon box?

I'm up against a similar situation. I teach JROTC and I have an air rifle team. Our gun safe is too small to store the rifles safely, so I was looking for lockers or cabinets. The cheapest I found was about $800 for the size I need, so yesterday I went to my local steel supplier and bought $100 worth of steel and I'll be welding it up tomorrow.

I think your idea is a great idea.

Yes. Either spend $3500 or $100(ish) and some fun fabrication time
