'65 Impala SS 409
 

There is a red '65 Impala here in Charlottesville, VA with a for sale sign on it. I finally stopped and took a look at it today. Pretty fair shape from a quick walk around it. Crossed flags with "409" across the top on the front fender. Just like my '66 looked except it said "396" I didn't know the 409 went all the way into 1965.

Powerglide tranny. Black interior. Looks like its all stock and restorable. I'm out of town until tuesday PM, but if anyone has an interest in it I could go get pictures on Wednesday the 15th and post the phone number thats on it.

I know its not a '67-'72 truck, but wanted to let folks know its there. Not making 'em anymore you know?

I didn't think the 409 was carried all the way to 66 either. It was an early sixties option that was replaced with the 427.

I think 64 was the last year for the 409s 65s had 396s til 70 when the went to the 454 as the biggest. 67 would probably be the first year to get a 427 since vettes had them first in 66 i think.

My '66 Impala was not an SS but it had a 396. Had the same two door not center piller body as the SS but bench seats not buckets. I always thought the '65's big block was a 396 too. The fender side badges on this look just like my 396's did except they have a 409 on them. They look aged - about like the rest of the car, but I sure didn,t think the 409 went into '65 model year.

That is a fairly rare car, 65 was the last year for the 409 but most people who wanted a bigblock went with the new 396:bowtie:

I have an original 65 Impala SS 409/340 4-spd car. The engine block serial number is on the left side of the block right in front of where the cylinder head meets the block. The numbers stamped there on my block are: 24 L106530 T0817 JB. I believe the number following the "T" tells you which block you have out of the 2850 or so made by the Tonawanda plant. "JB" simply represents the car's as-sold configuration, in this case a 65 Impala SS coupe with 409/340, rochester carb, and 4-spd manual. I assume that the other numbers represent when the block was fabricated (day, shift, etc.).

Looks to be the last model the 409 was used.
That would be a rare car if all numbers are correct.

The last year for the 409 was 1965 with a grand total of 2,828 made. (not including trucks) The reason for the low total was because of the 409 being phased out around Feb '65 for the new 396.
