Steering gear box
Working on 85 c10. Steering gear is pouring fluid. I have two options. Take it apart and rebuild or spend the extra money and replace.
My questions for you guys are: Has anyone out there ever rebuilt one? Problems dealing with those ball bearings? Is it worth the trouble to rebuild or should I just replace it? Thanks Jeff Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Steering gear box
I have had my '85 for 15 years or so. I have rebuilt one once and the second time, I just replaced it. In my honest opinion, buy another one. Keep the old one if you want to rebuild it just for the hell of it. Take a look around, you should be able to get a quality one with a good warranty without spending a ton of $$.

Re: Steering gear box
I got a rebuilt one from Auto Zone about 12 years ago and it is still working fine. I got about $90 for the old one as a core and paid about $120 for new one, so it was a cheap one. I know the prices have gone up a lot but I would shop around for a good deal. If you can get one with a lifetime warranty, then that is the way to go.

Re: Steering gear box
Hi, I just just put a rebuilt Delco Remy box in mine last month from Rock Auto. 110.00 plus 75.00 core charge. Shipping core back was about 14.00. Good Luck, Jay

That's what I needed to know.
Thanks |
Re: Steering gear box
I rebuilt mine last year, haven't had any problems. I paid $20 for the seal kit, a rebuilt unit was $150+ from local parts stores.

Re: Steering gear box
No reason to change your steering box over leaks. You can reseal one for under 20 bucks. No need to mess with the internal balls either.
Tx Firefighter has a tech article on the process with good instructions. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=619634 |
Re: Steering gear box
Ditto.
If you need to actually REBUILD it, if you need to get into the internals, then you're better off replacing it. But for just the seals, it should be easy enough to go the cheap route. |
Re: Steering gear box
Man that was a good write up thanks a lot! I think I'll give that a shot before replacing the whole thing.

Before he went into the witness protection program, Tx Firefighter did a bunch of how-to threads like that.

Re: Steering gear box
I'd like to read his write up on the power steering pump also...

Re: Steering gear box
Those seem pretty straight forward. Looks like a bushing, a seal, and about 6 O rings. I'll be doing that as well. I plan to replace the hoses rather than reuse.
