2.8l to 3.1l
I have a 1993 S10 extended cab with a 2.8l 5speed. It is a 2wd. The oil pump decided it was done at 225000 miles, so now it needs rebuilt. I found a 1991 camaro 3.1l automatic with the wiring and computer for a great price. It has 91k miles on it. My question us this, can I swap the engines out and keep my 5 speed trans and current truck setup with the 3.1l? I figure there will be differences in the intake, but I should be able to swap my intake on it and keep the tbi.
Thanks in advance. If thereally wasn't ice covering everything here in Indiana, I would get some pics of the truck. |
Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
Is the 3.1 a 60 degree engine like the 2.8?

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
Yes it is. Currently, it has a 700r4 attached to it. I have the complete engine, harness, and computer from the camaro. I am going through wiring diagrams to see if I can adapt the harness to my truck fuse panel and just use it as is.

I would think it would drop right in. :)

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
Thanks! Now that the engine is in front of me, I am sure it will match up to the bellhousing ok. I am going through the wiring harnesses right now. I may try and keep the mpfi on the 3.1l since it literally has everything new on it. The shop that went through it 3k miles ago showed me all the receipts, a video of the engine running before taking it out, and the car it came from. If I can pull off the swap using all the camaro stuff, that would be pretty cool.

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
People do this swap all the time. Put a Firebird 3.4L into a 2.8L Fiero once.

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
Cool. I am finding a lot of info on the 3.4l, but not much on the 3.1l. I know the heads on the 3.4l flow much better. Other than that, I couldn't tell you the differences.

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
gm use to offer a crate engine just like what you want to do . even came with the ecm prom to make the computer feed the fuel mix correct for bigger engine.

No kidding?! That's cool! I am going to dive into this starting tomorrow. Need the truck back on the road. It may take a couple days to splice in the wiring, but I am pretty optimistic about my odds. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: 2.8l to 3.1l
The cavalier guys are dropping 3.9s in place of the 2.8. Just an option.
