86 k10 rears?

(((STORY OF WHAT HAPPEN)))So I was driving me k10 home from work when I started to get this loud humming noise from the rear and during right turns it would knock, instantly I thought I broke teeth off the gears or something. Turns out the rear was empty of oil and the carrier bearing was completely shredded and melted looking...
As I went to the glove box it showed I had a g80 locking rear! (never knew that till recently, was very surprised). Of course my k10 is the odd ball with the 12 bolt rear.
(((REAL PROBLEM IS HERE)))For the love of me I CAN NOT find another 12 bolt 30 spline g80 rear within the years 74-87. I went to many junkyards and all I can find is 10 bolt rears with g80's. I don't feel like buying a brand new posi system, I'v been doing some research and it says 74-87 blazers/trucks have g80's.
Now since I cannot find any 12 bolt rears with it in between those years, I'm wondering what chevy/gmc used above 87? Did they continue with the g80? And if they did what changed past 87? And could I still use the g80 thats above the year 87 in my 12 bolt rear as long as the g80 I find is still 12 bolt? (P.s my gearing ratio is 3.07 or as others say 3.08)Right now I'm running an open diff, only one I could find :banghead: not fun, hard to do donuts in the fields :metal:

Have a shop rebuild your rear end for you.

The carrier got scored from the bearing, the internals of the gov lock are fine but the case or carrier is all scored pretty bad

Every piece of that rear end can be replaced tho.

Where could I find or buy just the carrier?

Still wondering if I can put a newer g80 from yrs 88+ in my 12 bolt rear

Is it the posi case that got scored where the bearing rides? If it is braze all the score marks up & turn it down on the lathe & motor on bro! Done this hundreds of times on all sorts of things that hold bearings & go round & round.

No you can't. In the early 80's they went to a 10 bolt rear and from all I heard they won't interchange

G80 is the option code. 10 bolts can have the option, 12 bolts, 14 bolts even. Not the same parts or part numbers, but just a gov lock for the specific axle. Or gov bomb as most call them. I wouldn't go out of my way to find one. If you have a proper ratio open carrier already installed go get a lunch box locker such as a loc rite. You can install it without removing the carrier.

Well idk how a heavy chevy will do with lockers on the road, I do mostly road driving but every once in a while I like to get together with some buddies and tear around in the dirt/snow. I liked the g80 because it wasn't full time locked
ok I had it wrong, I looked into them, but apparently they arnt that durable, they say good up to 33 inch tires, i'm currently running 33's. and to be honest (call me cheap yes) I wasn't looking to be spending 400$+ on a auto locker

Ran into another problem.. idk why but I can hear the humming/whirring sound in the rear again when I'm barely on the gas.. All the bearings are new also..any ideas?

so I could use this.. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...0-lr/overview/ it replaces my spider gears? my rear is a 12 bolt 30 spline so everything should work?

This is a good wake up call on why we check all fluids at every oil change.

I have a detroit locker in the rear of my 81, and it drives fine on the street. I have heard that the cheaper lockers aren't as forgiving.

Not the same locker that you are looking at, but here is a video of a spartan locker which is similar. Check out 1:40 in the video.

that clank sounded unforgiving lol, any lockers that are automatic like the g80 almost? that don't click or BANG. I'm still thinking of a lunch box locker
If anything I'm going to check out some more junkyards for g80's.
I don't really do any crawling, mostly donuts in fields and whatnot

I got a good question here.
Since I now have an open diff in my rear, would I be able to take the internals of the g80 carrier and put them in the open diff carrier?

Yea the detroit is expensive, but it is one of the best out there. Honestly, you should just buy a complete axle with a g80 or detroit true trac already installed. I have seen them for under 300$. Only issue with the g80 is that it could be 40 years old. With that being said make sure you check the condition before you buy.

That is true but I still have my g80, so if I can find a g80 that just needs any internal parts if fine, I can take them from my old one. All I really need is the damn carrier which I cant find, and nobody sells just the carrier

Your truck may have come to you with a 12 bolt, but it didn't come from the factory that way. Switch over to 10 bolts was done in '81 or '82. If you are hell bent on a gov lock look for a 68-81 ish complete assembly from the junk yard with your gear ratio.

That's the conclusion I came to, if anything I'm going to buy a lock right lunchbox locker
