22 transit wheels and 285/45/22 on a dropped 68?
 

Looking at a set of the Gm transit wheels with factory tires and was wondering if they will for ok on a 4/6 drop 68 lwb fleet side . Guy only wants 600 for the set with tires .

It comes down to overall wheel/tire diameter.

265/35/22 has a diameter of 29.3"

285/45/22 has a diameter of 32.1"

I am running 265/35/22 on my 67, this seems to be the most common size. My truck is dropped 3/5 with springs but only gave an actual drop of 2/4, I think due to the original springs being sagged. I do plan on dropping it a few more inches all the way around.

As you can see there is almost 2.5" difference in the tire height from what I am running and what you want to run. It would be very, very tight to run the taller tires with that much drop. I honestly don't recall seeing a lowered truck on transits with much else than the 256/35/22 tires.

Another thing to consider is that the center hub on the transits is smaller than that on your 68' assuming everything is still original. I just machined mine to fit.

I would assume that in order to use them on these body style, you would have to use adapters. Correct? Transit wheels are positive offset, but these trucks are zero/negative offset.

I second what ybnorml said, the 265/35 is very popular and some guys even go lower profile with a 255/30 (which I think is what's on the truck that weq92f posted). I, however, did not want that small of a tire on the rear of mine so I went with a 285/40 which is closer to what you are looking at. I did have to do a few things to get that to fit though. My rears have been modified to 4" backspacing and I had to remove the inner fender well that's tack welded to the outer fender. I don't have any pics on the truck yet, but the below pic is my rear setup compared to my front setup which is just the unmodified transit with a 265/35. With the unmodified 6" backspacing on the rear you are either going to have to run a spacer (at least 1") or modify the bed floor to get them to fit, and even then I think it's going to be tight to get that 285/45 to fit that low without clearancing the fender well.

I am not running a spacer on the front, but I am running an 1-1/4" spacer on the rear.

I love those custom offsets. I thought about doing the same to mine but I'm too cheap :lol:

I am too, that's why I did it myself, haha. Really wasnt that difficult to do and didnt cost anything except for a few cut off discs and about two hours of my time.

How hard was it to pop out the inside after you cut? What did you use to pop them out? Thanks

My ocd has a hard time looking at those custom offset transit wheels.
The lip is different because you’re look at the back of the hoop with the center turned around. I guess it’s just me.

Now that Detroit Steel Wheels makes a 22” wheel, I think they will be getting a lot more business.
Plus GM has put a clamp down on keeping track of their transit wheels.
Almost all of the normal suppliers say they can’t get them anymore.
