5.3 Vortec Air Intake???
 

For those with a 5.3 Vortec what are you doing to build and route your Air Intake? Any pictures?

lots of guys are using aluminum tubing with custom bends. just remember to keep the maf sensor a little downstream from the closest sharp bend. bends cause disrupted air flow so the sensor gets fooled as to how much air is actually going through. I have seen some with a 90 deg bend off the intake, then over to the inner fender with a filter in the wheel well. just be sure the water can't get in there when driving in the rain, however you do yours. I have seen some with the air tubing bent right around backwards and the cone style air filter faces the firewall.

here are a few examples off the net about the air intake systems. you can copy and paste to google. some guys will say to use plastic or composite tubing because it picks up less under hood heat, if you worry about those things

siliconeintakes.com has a whole mess of applicable parts. I've seen the factory stuff re-used successfully; no reason not to. I think my build thread has a few pictures of what I did.

You can put a filter right on the throttle body and your done.

Eric...you can't put the filter right on the throttle body and be done..there's a maf that's got to go in there..just saying..by the time you put all that stuff put together ( throttle bidy,coupling, maf, coupling, intake tube,filter) you start running out of room and need to turn 90 degrees or so to get it all In..

On my last project I was able to do this but it was expensive and here is why :) If you use a Holley HP-EFI or Dominator and their harness they use a speed density tune and it does not require a MAF.

I loved the operation and clean look but $2400 for their system is just a bit much so I will be going with the stock set up that will require a MAF.

This is how it looked in my last project which was a 56 Corvette with an LS6, all I had to do is drill a small hole in the rubber between the air filter and TB for an air temp sensor. It is a pretty slick system and I will be using a Holley Dominator on my next project which is a 57 GMC with an LS2.

I used parts from siliconeintakes and another company (can't remember right now who it was) and it worked out nice.

My instructions said to keep the MAF in the middle of a section at least 6 inches straight, at least a foot from the intake opening.

Ok curt...i stand somewhat corrected..haha..but on a normal setup youve got to have the maf..I used all spectre parts on mine and got my alum tubes off ebay and just built it to fit my truck..beautiful vette btw.

This is a TPI engine but you could do the same with an LS.
The air filter is in the wheel well behind the headlight. It's a true cold-air intake.
I never cared for the idea of having the air intake right behind the radiator where the air is the hot. Cold air gives you a touch more power and fuel mileage and is why the factories have been doing it on new cars for many years now.
