67 Stepside Build
 

Adding my build to the list. Bought a 67 Stepside in October with a trashed 350 (see pics below) and a Muncie M20. Pulled out the motor and bought a 6.0L LQ from a 2002 with 317 heads. Not that into the flame job, but I can live with it for now. Here are the details on what I am thinking for the rest of this build:

• TKO 600 Trans---Correction decided on T56 instead (see other edits in later post)
• Debating on Flywheel (McLeod, Adv. Adapters, or American Powertrain?)
• Debating on Clutch (Advanced Adapters or CenterForce Dual Friction)
• Hydraulic Clutch Conversion (Still researching if Hydraulic Throw-Out or Hydraulic Slave/Fork Style type preferred)
• Quicktime Bellhousing RM-6036
• Debating Headers - probably Doug Thorley Tri-Y
• Crossmember - probably CPP
• Front Disk Brakes - May do CPP setup with drop spindles for this one - but need to decide if sticking with manual or move to power
• Wheels - Likely Steel Rally - just not sure if 15, 16, or 17 inch
• Engine Motor Mount Adapter Plates - Still researching (related to header choice)
• Exhaust - Magnaflow or Flowmaster???
• Likely going to remove that huge heater core box. Ugly!!!
• Going to start with a carb setup on the LQ for sake of simplicity for now. Also, I like the look better. Might integrate the newer fuel/ECU stuff later.

OK, that is all I can think of at this time. It is late and my brain is toast. Gotta get some ZZZZZ's. Looking forward to sharing the build and hearing your comments on my bullets above. Not locked down on anything quite yet so now is the time to throw out your opinions. Thanks!

Looking for some advice from someone out there that has done a LS/T56 conversion in a 67, or similar, pickup with a stock crossmember as shown above. Trying to get a definite answer on whether or not the T56 bellhousing will clear the stock crossmember. I already did a test fit with the engine and bellhousing only and the bellhousing clears the crossmember by maybe an inch (see crummy photo below). However, I am not sure how much the T56 will have to be angled to fit and I am worried the crossmember might interfere.

Anyone have experience with this? Would be great if I could know for certain if it will clear before I try and install the engine with the T56. Oh, I am using the CPP engine stands and LX Innovations motor mount adapters that allow me to move the engine forward/backward. Currently I have them set to put the engine as far back as possible (see photo below). Thanks!!!

Well, this build has been sitting since the first post nearly a year ago. Got distracted with upgrades to my 63 Chevy II Wagon but now getting back to this! Updating my build list based on the components I have actually purchased and have started to install so this can be well documented....pending it all actually works out well!

• T56 Transmission from SST with forward shift position (to clear bench seat)
• McLeod 30lb Flywheel P/N 460530
• CenterForce Clutch P/N DF395010
• Hydraulic Clutch Conversion - Chevy Performance Slave P/N 24264182 and Linkage/MC Kit from Captain Fab
• Stock T56 Bellhousing for now for ease of install
• Doug Thorley Tri-Y Headers P/N THY-323Y-C
• Crossmember from SST (with transmission)
• Front Disk Brakes, drop spindles, and drop springs. May also do rear disk and convert to 5 lug - Looking for recommendations on these items!
• Wheels - Probably Steel 15's - not sure on exact style yet.
• CPP Engine Stands P/N 6372MP-SM and LSX Innovations ST11 Motor Mount Adapters
• Exhaust - Looking for recommendations!
• Keeping heater core box for now. Maybe remove later
• Going to start with a carb setup on the 6.0 LQ for sake of simplicity

These threads discuss cutting out the stock crossmember (the type up front near the bellhousing) as well as T56 shifter position:

Lessons Learned: 1) Better off removing the crossmember even though it is a pain to cut out 2)An aftermarket T56 does NOT need a front shift kit to clear a bench seat

This thread discusses header/frame clearance in my truck which appears to have wider top frame rails than later years.

So the truck is on the road now. LQ/T56 conversion done. Hyd clutch. 4/6 drop. New wheels and tires. Power disc brakes in front. Cleaner engine bay. It was a busy winter and spring. Made some progress but still need to get rid of the flames...although sometimes I feel like they are growing on me. Body work might be next. Some pics of the progress.

Thanks! 16” wheels. Wanted to stay old school but provide a little more clearance for disc brake calipers so went one step up from 15”.

I really like the rallye wheel look. I am going to change mind to 16 or 17 " rallyes.
