starter questions
 

I was looking into buying a high torque mini start for my 1970 k10, 4 speed truck with a 350. i crawled under to see if i had a straight or staggered starter bolt pattern and found i have neither of those. my starter bolts to the transmission with two bolts through the nose. do i need to buy a start that bolts up the same way or can i buy on that will mount to my block? thanks for all the help.

I just changed out the solenoid on my starter, I have a '69 K20, it mounted like you described, through the nose, but had a third bolt going into it from the backside.

The high torque starters I saw bolted straight up into the block, this is how the started mounted on my '74 Chevy K10 with an auto tranny. The high torque starter would need to bolt up the same way as your stock starter.

I had a 3 bolt starter bolted to the bellhousing like yours. It wouldn't start the engine when hot, so I replaced it with a 95 Chevrolet truck mini starter bolted to the block. It worked fine.

I didn't look when I had my starter out, it the block drilled and tapped? If so, that's good information to know!

I think most of the blocks have starter holes in them, but I think some of the very early ones do not.

Another question is why swap it? The trouble is usually not the starter.

The trouble for mine WAS the starter. I ditched it for a block mount mini-starter 15 years ago and have abandoned the iron Delco starters almost completely at this point.

The LT1 style GM gear reduction starter with supported nose will work or an aftermarket starter without. I have used both.
