Re: spare tire carrier

Probably not so rare. You might plug in the option code into search, see what you get.

It's not on the SPID on my 72, but it's Super, so I suppose it has everything anyway.

My 71 Custom Deluxe shows it, but it's a P13, which is an in bed carrier.

On a side note, some day I'll get under that 72 to determine how that thing works. Looks like a real pain, especially the state of the bolts. At least one is bent. From this angle the in-bed carrier is more better.

My 70 has it but I tried to get my new spare tire on it and pulled up. No luck at all to get it up and secured. I installed a bed mount for the spare.

My 68 has one in the bed(on the spid) and one under the bed too(not on the spid)!
Was the one under the bed standard equipment by 68?

How do you know if your truck came with a spare tire and/or carrier? I'm new to these trucks, I am more familiar with my 1970 Camaro. My truck is missing the SPID so I can't look there and I didn't see anything underneath.

Yes. Standard for 1968 MY.
I had to remove mine for a Class III hitch.
The stock spare rests on brackets in the underbed brace, hung from a long bolt on the drivers side, and on the passenger side, a long bolt w/special nut with a 1'' reinforced ring goes thru a 'keyhole' in the brace and holds it up. A chain with a padlock was the best way to secure it.
Does not play well with aftermarket rims and tires.
Tubeless tires can lose the rim seal and depressurize [go flat] while slung under during rough-roading.
Best way [if you're not 26 anymore] to return tire to stowed position was with a small bottle jack.

I have a class III hitch on mine.It fits well with the P-235-75-15 tire.
I pull a 18' car trailer with it.

Re: spare tire carrier

My truck, 72c10, came with the spare tire carrier in the bed. It has been there from day one. Its not on the SPID. Nor Has the the under bed carrier been mounted, and it too is not on the spid. I dont know if a spare was an option back then.

Quite a few of the in bed tire carries here in the the south west. Gave a bit more ground clearans on the many undeveloped roads that were common back then.

the carrier itself is not that hard to find. Its the little bits of hardware that goes with it that always gets lost . Do a search because it was discussed before and somebody had all the actual hardware.

They would vibrate loose. and thats when the hardware goes missing.

On 3/4 ton trucks I believe spares were an option so tire carrier were based on that. And I suppose a choice where to hang the spare

currious thing is that my 68K20 has the under bed carrier while my 72c10 has it up in the bed. Nothing on either Spid refferences a spare or mounting .

I have 235/85/R16LTs. Originally 7.00x17.5.
Do you have a longbed, Mike?
My truck is a shortbed stepside.

On the shortbed frame, I ran out of room. Possibly I could redrill 1/2''- 9/16'' holes thru the carrier and frame, and remount the spare hanger set up. Bigger fish to fry for now.
