Here it goes again, plz chime in

Saw an old thread here about someone upgrading a 1967 to power steering without dimpling the frame and without the use of spacers. Has anyone here done it and if so can you provide the part number to the steering box? Its a long shot but I thought I would ask the knowledge base. :chevy:

Here is the thread, I PMed the author but he does not have the part number.

Any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance to all

Anyone, several here claim to have done it. None have provided details or part numbers, anyone?

I am aware of that spacer plate to avoid dimpling but would like to find a gear box that requires neither. The spacer plate with any spacers, I have read, that it may throw off the steering geometry. I have read that they are out there and some have done it. If anyone has a part number for such a gear box it would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck with that.

It's really close and I'm sure some have done it without dimpling the frame but to do it right heat it up and dimple it. The gear box will fit right with it dimpled and not affect the steering geometry. I can't see how a power gear will fit right without doing it.

I will look at my 67 C30 this weekend.
PO has added Power Steering.

My Burban has been upgraded without a spacer plate. I did not do the work so I have no idea what box it is. I can look at it next week and see if I can find a casting number.

This is a dumb question, please just accept what you have to do to put PS on the 67 frame, you either use spacers or dimple the frame, there is NOT a STEERING box available that doesn't require the dimple or spacers....that is it, end of story.

Can you please explain what was done to my 67 Burban to install the power steering box?

Thanks Getter Done and HO455 I have seen similar post so I believe the box is out there. I look forward to your replies.

PO has notched the frame on mine.
The steering box on mine looks like the same one on my 84 chevy truck.

The guys at CPP assure me that their gearbox pn cp50014 will not need dimpling if the frame has the raised mounting holes. I thought I would post for others with 67 frames.

Did you end up ordering this box or another one? That box is a lot of money compared to the other stock replacement power steering boxes out there.

I hope it works for you. I have a 67 Suburban and I'm in the same boat trying to figure out what will work best for my application.

Yes I ordered that box, and it is pricey but you can find it re-manufactured on ebay for about 250. I will let you know how it works out when I install it.

Slice a T into the frame grab your torches and heat it enough to use your BFH to dimple it and weld it back up , grind for appearance and be done in an hour . or reinvent the wheel and spend a bunch of $ when you didn't need to .:smoke:

Comparatively speaking the difference is not that much, and if i can keep my frame intact and the geometry the same without dimpling or spacers then I think an additional 50 bones will suit me just fine. On ebay i can get the same part number box for 250 bones so really its all about what we want to do to our babies and how to go about it. I respect your opinion and to the others that say no way, move on, it won't work, well, it really just pays to look for what suits your needs. And don't be a Grumpy old man, hehe

I wasn't able to find any numbers on my steering box but here are some more pictures that may help someone.

Looks obvious, top of frame rail bent in to accommodate steering box????

Firedemon, I have the parts in hand, the kit came in during the week. My daughter and I are going to do the upgrade today. I can tell you that if you have the raised mounting hubs you will need no dimpling with this box, I will post pictures either later today or tomorrow or I will PM them to you if you'd like.

I disagree just based on the quality of work the PO did to my Burban. He said that he installed the steering bow and if he had needed to modify the frame he would have used a BFH and it would be very obvious. It may be that there are early and late frames or that some plants used slightly different frames. I don't know the truth but I am willing to bet that my frame has not been modified to mount the steering box.

67 Heaven Do you know the ratio of your new box?

Re: Here it goes again, plz chime in

Well the CP50014 power steering box will fit your 67 frame with no dimpling required if you have the raised mounting hubs. I have it installed but have some alignment issues with my alternator now that i am using the second grove off the main. I will post pictures of the steering box. If price is an issue you can find them remanufactured on ebay anywhere from 220 to 250. Pictures to follow and thanks to bryanw1968 who posted pictures of his install on his 68 on a thread here, and all his help.
