67 longbox stepside
 

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on this site. I have had this truck for almost 3 yrs with the hopes of restoring it with my son. He just turned 16 and I really want to do this before he is gone on his own. He loves the shop and getting greasy. ( getting kind of rare in kids these days) . I restored a Camaro 20 years ago before kids, had to sell for diapers and a minivan. Many of you can relate to this. My questions are is a long stepper a desirable truck ? My son and I both want a short fleet so I was thinking of shortening the frame and doing that. Any comments on this? The box and gate are solid as a rock, minus the wood floor of course. Thanks for any info in advance.!

Welcome! A long stepper being "desirable" is kind of a relative question. May be to some, may not be to others. But if you do happen to get rid of the bed itself, I'd definitely be interested! Good luck!

Like said, it is a bit of a relative question. I personally own a shortbed stepside and absolutely love it. I will say that stepsides are a bit of a rarity and a longbed stepside is even more so! You have any pictures of the truck?

A long stepside! Those really aren't very common. I personally think short step trucks make better looking frame layers, especially when it's more of a patina or natural finish. For all other applications, I'm partial to the fleet side. Either way, can't go wrong doing the project with your son.

..the fact you have a 67 is a great start..I would not cut on that frame..Personally I feel to many go under the torch((save a longbed)).that is an awesome truck as is.Looking for garage time with your son ..how about some disc brakes,do not know your engine/trans combo but if it needs to be freshened/upgraded there is something that is a learning experience that he will appreciate when behind the wheel...you know the rest,wheels,tires,exhaust etc. etc.....I guess I am getting old but I am tired of seeing these things cut down...and yes a 67 long stepper is desirable...then again I like all 67-72 gm trucks.

The desirability of the truck depends on who you're asking. If it were my truck, I'd restore it true to the numbers on the VIN, but thats because I have no preference on bed length. Long steppers are certainly more rare than the rest of the options, and I think it would be a shame to lose a neat original truck like that. Maybe trading it for a SWB truck would be an easier option... who knows, maybe someone out there is sitting on a SWB fleetside wishing he had a LWB Stepside!

I think the long steppers are way cool! But when I was young I only like the short steppers. Have I matured??

I would stick with the long stepper for the originality, and because it is a bit unusual as well!

Long steppers are cool & rare, but don't mistake rare for desirable and high value. They don't come near the resale value of a true swb truck. The cut down trucks have some increase in resale value depending on the quality (pro welder vs backyard) and location. There are a ton of cut down lwb trucks in my area and they aren't selling fast or for much as most guys don't want hackjobs or fakes, only true swb frame with matching SPID & Title.

So build what you guys like & want, but because how much you put into it if you end up just wanting to unload it.

First year, long stepper. I might be biased to the 67's, but I totally agree with the general consensus here. I'd drive the Hell out if it (after father son project) just because it is different. No offense to anyone, SB's are cool, BUT they're getting to be like Camaro's/Mustang's or the tri-five Chev's. Just my 2 cents. Either way, WELCOME from Utah, you will love this site!

Thanks to all of you guys for the info. Sorry, for the late reply but I just got in from the shop and looked at post. I will definitely post some pics tomorrow, or today I mean, it is past midnight here. Great info, I knew I came to the right place. My wheels are really spinning now. I have a ton of questions for you all. I am new to the 67-72. Learning as I go. Had a bunch of square bodies over the years but these are different. I look forward to hearing from you all again soon. I am leaning alot harder now to leaving it a long stepper. Didn't realize that they weren't that common.

I think i put a post in the projects and builds instead of general discussion. Tried posting pics but it didn't work. I am new to site and not really sure where i should post? Anyways my post is there if you guys can help me out. Contacted admin. and will put pics on when i can.

I was in Ace hardware yesterday (FL) and as I came out and got into my car a 1969 C/10 step side long box pulled up and parked next to me. Of course me owning one I got into a conversation with the guy. He had bought it brand spanking new. It was a 250, 3 speed, no radio with the only option a step bumper. It had 210,000 miles on it and the guy loves it. He said he has a new truck, but would rather drive the 69. These one owner's are still out there.

Very nice! Looks like something I'd like to own as-is.

Long steps are really rare ( at least around here ), only ever seen two in real life and a long time ago.
