Some cool 'ol rigs.

Watching videos like this makes me wish at times I was around back then (I'm 23). Seeing all those truck on the road, being able to drive them, they all had so much class. Nothing like those dang cookie-cutter rigs of today, all egg shaped and fiberglass.

Something about trucking in the 50's - 70's really gets me.

The other thing nice about the old days was that almost every other truck was Detroit powered.

I love these videos of old trucks with music. Also, there were movies and even a TV show about truckin'. I go to these ATHS shows and they are always talking about how to improve them. Our Tri-State show starts Thursday and ends with a banquet/meeting Saturday. They wonder what we can do to make sure it keeps going. Once diner time comes around, that's it. All there is to do at night is sit at someone's truck or walk around more. I suggested showing trucker movies, they thought it was a great idea, been quite a few years, still nothing. The idea is to involve more people than just the guys who bring trucks and this would give local folks another reason to come check out the show. Heck, if enough people came maybe the Rurutan Club kitchen could start making some better food! :lol:

Another thing different about trucking back then is truckers weren't wearing sweat pants and sneakers and they sat up proud so they could see what they were doing! :lol:

That's for sure Tim. I see some truckers today sitting way down in the seat. I just don't get it, lol. We would like to sit up high to make sure we could see good over that long hood. Another thing today is that little tiny steering wheel. I find them a little freaky.

Sure beats the heck outta what they got now-a-days. I worked at a firetruck dealership for a couple years. The amount of electronics just to make that diesel fire is nuts... not to mention the DEF.

As I read somewhere once: "Back when men were men and women were glad of it", 'course you better have been with Armstrong steering, 2 or 3 sticks, and a Detriot screamin' all day...

My '61 5000 has one of those "eyebrow" hoods, if you don't sit up yer not going to see a thing!


I assume both of you guys were driving back in the good 'ol days of trucking?

You left out the shifter up to the roof, Bill.

I've never been a truck driver professionally. I just love trucks and paid attention to them all my life. Been around them a lot, know drivers, and drove on certain occasions back before CDLs. Mostly grain and hay, also dump trucks. I am considering getting my CDL and finish out driving.

Like special -K I've never been a professional trucker but I've always been very interested. I can remember being a young kid in the early 70's we took a trip from CT. to Norfolk Virginia too see my brother graduate boot camp. Along the entire ride my two brothers and myself each kept a list of all brands of the big rigs that were on the opposite side highway going by. At the end of the day we'd compare notes. Freightliner always won. It seemed every other truck that drove by was a CF Freightliner (Consolidated Freight if memory serves me) Many years later one of my brothers wound up working for Freightliner building trucks in Statesville North Carolina and my other brother became a trucker. I wound up being a mechanic working on trucks... Our favorite TV show at that time was BJ and the Bear...

Mom tells me, way back when, I crawled over to the mail slot in the front door with Christmas on it's way, flipped it open, and said "Slaus Man, me dumpruck". He brought me my first Tonka and it went from there.

Never drove Semi's professionally, but drove heavy Single and Tandem Axle straight trucks for about 3 years. Loved the trucks as I still do, but learned to hate the traffic especially in congested areas and I stepped out of it. Had friends that drove professionally though and I would ride with them, driving once in a while.

Also had a couple of heavy trucks on my own years later that I used in business.

Started driving professionally in the early '70's but first got behind the wheel in the mid '60's as a kid.

Never lost the "bug", lol.

My dad has been working for Yellow since '90- '91, going between driving and working the dock. I know exactly what you mean about the traffic, I've heard it from him enough!

One uncle back in the 80's? used to run a small trucking business with his brother if I remember correctly. Only a truck or two.

Other uncle owns a freight brokering co.

So in some ways I guess the interest runs in the family! Only mines with the vintage stuff :gmc:

I talk to this guy at the Carlisle truck show. His rig is a '99 with 4.2 million miles on it. More than that now. He sure keeps it up nice.I know it's not old school truckin', more like large car style. But gotta respect the pride

Nope, never did. I remember back when I was around 10-12yrs my mom brought me by the terminal. He was working the yard and gave me a ride moving a trailer in the yard-horse. Every once and a while he'll stop by the house with a tractor if he's going to pick up near the area.
