SPID Flaw

So I was at the Mecum auction in Kansas City today. There must be an issue with the spid labels in the short bed trucks only. In every short bed the label had come apart right in the area where the wheelbase is listed. And on others the spid was gone. Long beds were all intact. Must have been a production or supplier issue on the short beds only.

The answer here is simple. A short-bed truck, when driven, by nature produces a vibration in what can only be called a double-ur-money sine wave. This type of sine wave reacts directly with the special ink used in the wheelbase section of the SPID labels on some trucks. For reasons unknown to scientists it seems to affect mostly low-optioned trucks. Theory has it that the weight of extra options, or option packages, causes a dampening effect thereby canceling out said SPID destroying vibrations. Many owners have lowered their trucks, in an effort to reduce the effects of this horrible sine wave, but once the damage is done, there is nothing that can bring back an obliterated SPID. The only thing one can do is to STOP DRIVING ANY SHORT-BED TRUCK!

No, I think it's much more simple than that. Previous owners clearly scratched out that annoying 115 out of sheer embarrassment. ;)

I like the explanation. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to happen to Blazers, so there must be a specific length that's subject to those destructive vibrations.

Or, it was a shortened long bed and hiding the info....(cynical thoughts)

That's why I love this site. Most are true enthusiasts. Not con-man opportunists.
Go long or go home I say Lol. Not that I wouldn't take a short box if it came along just would have to say it's the "Wife's" truck lol.

Good Fun! Certainly need to do your homework before buying a vehicle at an auction.

This is very funny but sad too. The trucks are beautiful in all the different wheelbases. But some like the 115 only and some builders are wanting the big bucks....buyer beware..... if they're done right nothing is wrong with a shortened truck but it's wrong to try and sell as original.

They're just preparing the SPID for when they lengthen them into Longhorns.

The '71 "factory" GMC short bed w/402 and with the ultra rare 127" wheelbase sticker sold for 25K.

Ya know, it's funny. alot praise the swb, alot praise the long horn. but for some reason they don't think much for the lwb trucks. I personally like the lwb truck because I use it alot for your standard lumber lengths and such...

Does Mecum require that sellers divulge an altered vehicle prior to sale or are they just there to sell a vehicle whether it's "real" or not?

As fare as preferences go, I've owned stock long and shortbeds and the longbeds ride so much more comfortably. I'm getting to be an old man and I now appreciate the Caddy-like ride my C/20 has over the rocking horse ride of my old K/10 shorty.
