88-94 steering column into a square

Looking for shifter options for swapping a 4L80E into my 87 R30. Would a column from a 88-94 overdrive equipped truck bolt in? It would be nice to have the indicator and detents that match up to the 4L80E.

Thanks!

Just swap the indicator for one for a 700r4. My truck has a 4l60e and was an original TH400 and the detent works just fine. Jay

There are reports here that this method does not allow manual selection of 1st gear, that there isn't enough travel in the stock column to allow selection of all the gears. And I'm going to a 4L80, not a 60 (not sure if there is a difference or not).

88-94 collumns are identical to the 84-87 collumns, so putting one in would be a little wasteful, if it is only the indicator you are worried about. 95-98 collumns are a different animal, that do not belong in a square. So you should just modify you existing collumn to your liking. I hope that helped you. Good luck.

The internal detents are different for the overdrive transmissions and the throw is longer.

I'm thinking lots of people have done that swap without changing the column. My truck has had both a 700r4 and TH400 and both shifted into all the gears from the column just fine. All I changed was the indicator.
