Help! I can't get the distributer back on =/
 
Hey guys! I took my engine apart to check my lifters and replace my intake gaskets a while back when it quit running, now I've got everything back togther, but I can't get the distributer to go all the way down to the intake, no matter what I do... Is there some sort of trick to doing this? I would really like to get it going before 3:30 (2:45 now) as I gotta head off to work...

takea big screwdriver, and turn your oil pump drive a little bit, that's your problem. it needs to line up with the slot in the bottom of the distributor

If you know for sure you have it in the correct position, try bumping the motor over just enough to get the starter to engage is usually enough to turn the oil pump rod and the distributor will fall in.

Where is this oil pump drive at?

Unfortunately, the battery in the truck is dead, if I turn the balancer by hand will that help?

i had the same problem in my truck the way poon described it will work just gie it enough of a throw otherwise throw the battery on charge and crank it a tad

If you have a tire tool you can adjust the pickup rod in the oil pump. Make sure its clean so nothing will dirty up the inside of engine. The tire tool where the L shaped socket it needs to be facing toward the front driver side fender where the fender and core support meet at. That should get you really close.

I found myself a different battery and threw it on the charger, ends up it is about twice the power of the other battery I had in there, and less than a year old... I should be able to crank on my truck for hours with it :)

Turned the motor an inch and clunk, the distro fell right in :) Just gotta attach my hot air intake and run 4 more plug wires and it should be in condition to start :)
