I purchased a project 3 weeks ago 3/4ton 1950 pickup with 235 V6 Was buried in a garage no battery just new the engine wasn't locked up. Brought it home checked the basics ,threw the only battery I had a 12 volt deep cycle battery on it small minibike fuel cell and she fired up. Ran ruff but after a few tweaks she's running great. My question is I know these trucks came in 6 volts , I can't read anything on the generator, coil. How and where do I check to see? Also there are no lights or bulbs to check and see on the truck. Sorry for the long winded ? Just wanted to give a little background info. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you got it running check the output of the generator with a volt meter..

How can you check if the starter motor is 6V or 12V? Apart from connecting up to a six volt battery of which I haven't got. Thanks

Essex..alot of 12v conversions still run the 6v starter..it shouldn't hurt it as your only using it momentarily

Yes I am aware thanks. It's just that I believe my starter is 12v but my ring gear is for a 6v and it keeps getting chewed up. The gearing is not compatible. I just want to confirm the voltage.

is there a tag or anything on the starter or designation for voltage stamped on the solenoid or pedal switch? if there is even a delco tag or stamping in the casting then you could check the numbers against those on the old car manuals project here. it will give you the original specs for a 12volt system from a next generation task force truck, 55-59, including the number of teeth on the flywheel and starter drive pinion.

it would be good to bookmark the page for further assistance later. if you hit the year specific index you can pick which year or model. some years have better laid out info than others.

good luck, hopefully you can getthis figured out before you have to buy a flywheel ring gear. I think the 6volt and 12 volt ring gears are different inside diameters so, unless you have a line on one, it could get spendy in a hurry for you.

Further to this thread.
In the end I simply removed the gearing (bendix) from the 6v starter motor and fitted it to a 12v motor. Only two long bolts separates the gearing. Works fine now.
