Diesel Killer
 
So I live in Idaho, with Bully Dog and other performance diesel companies in the surrounding area, there has been a huge influx of diesel truck enthusiasts because of it. With that said I've got myself a 1970 C10 truck and I want to build it so I can beat them "coal rollers" on the strip. I know they put out ridiculous numbers of torqueach but are heavy as sin. What kind of power do I need to be putting out engine wise to be competitive?

I think right off the bat you've got them by 2-3000 pounds of weight. How about a 'supercharged LQ9.? 600 plus horse power, takes the 'vette through the 1/4 mile in about 11 secs.

You'll need a minimum of 500 rw to be in the 12s with a heavy truck.
Don't forget, to put the power down you need sticky tires and a bit of suspension.

The reason I asked about how quick he needs to run is that serious trucks around here are in the 10's. To run well into the tens in a 5000 lb brick you will be needing at least 775 to 800 horsepower.

Junkyard 5.3 and a turbo.

I've been 11.44 on 10psi, cranked it up to 15 and only went 11.16 with 40% converter slippage per the datalog.

A well sorted out turbo LS in a 67-72 shouldn't have any trouble running 10s. I hope to this summer, just gotta sort out the converter.

There was a recall on GM superchargers and the upgraded parts are pretty cheap. A co-worker was able to put together a CTSV supercharger for about 1500 I think. The repair part kit was about 150, and he needed to buy a new top plate.

There are some deep into the nines. Running some running in four wheel drive. Check U-tube. A couple of years ago I got to go to a dyno session with a Dodge that posted 2200+ pound feet of torque. The thing was chained to the dyno with some concrete Armco barriers in the bed.

You can always build a gas motor to whip the diesels in the 1/4 mile, but it won't be a diesel killer on any other account. These boys may be building some fast diesels, but that's hardly the purpose of a diesel in a truck by design. Remember when truck performance meant ability to haul and hold up to it? :cool:

I really don't want to go faster than a 11 sec because then I think the NHRA starts getting a little stiffer with the rules

Where I'm at the diesel trucks kind of have taken over the car scene. It's kinda like how the import scene took over when The Fast and the Furious came out but with diesels. Eeveryone that buys a diesel then puts in a chip and some exhaust thinks that there truck is the baddest mofo around. I would like to build a engine for my little c10 and shut them up on the track or street..not that I condone that sort of thing ;) but there is a lot of docile farm roads here. I'll never have the money to build a prostreet to take out them torque goliaths that are built strictly for the track

Oh I hear ya...annoying sick cow sounds ringing out through the night. BuhWOO! buhWOO! Nothing sounds better than a gas motor RRRPPPMMM!!!! RRRPPPMMM!!!! :lol:

It's funny cuz I was into diesel performance in the '90s when most guys hated the smell of diesel exhaust. I moved away once the knuckleheads got into it. I saw a Cummins Dodge on the hiway today with skateboard wheels. Looked like wheels and tires from an Indy car. All four stuck out past the body a good 5-6". Prolly thinks he's a diesel expert and now he's going to learn about breaking windshields, chipping paint, and replacing broken hub/steering parts.

I've seen similar wheels and tires on big trucks here in Utah. They look ridiculous. Not sure who starts these trends or why.

If you want to go to a sanctioned drag strip you better pay attention to the rule book. If you run any kind of sticky tire you will need longer studs, and c-clip eliminators with a 12 bolt. If you run faster than about 11:50 you need a roll bar.
