1971 400 C.I oil pan
I've been searching for pan removal/install and plenty of threads and info (thank you).I haven't seen anything with the 400, so does lifting the engine a couple inches / taking the cap off also apply to the BB 400? It's dangling there between a cross member and the dipstick is out :p
I just want to hear this thing run since I was told it runs. (I bought it anyway) I also bought a one piece gasket rubber gasket, not sure of brand and 6 quarts of 10/40 conventional Castrol and some Permatex copper. Thanks in advance :metal: |

YUp!!
BB is the same as a sb. One more thing is to rotate the motor so the front rod journal is up out of the way. |

Re: 1971 400 C.I oil pan
I have a 400 in my '70, and it holds 5 quarts with a filter change. Be sure to just put in 5 and start it to fill the filter, then check. It should be full with 5 quarts.

Re: 1971 400 C.I oil pan
The FelPro PermaDry Plus oil pan gasket is the way to go. It is a molded rubber one-piece with steel torque limiters around the bolt holes to prevent over-tightening. I recommend the valve cover gaskets too if running stamped steel valve covers.

It's a pita too lift the engine too pull the pan and get it all buttoned back up even with a one piece gasket.
If your pickup isn't brazed good it's too easy to shift it upwards. Plus unless you have a lift all that work laying on your back isn't fun. I would pull the whole thing so much easier doing it on a stand. And you can get everything cleaned up nicely. |
