Where to find 1972 door panel screws?

Each panel takes one of these screws and finish washer (bottom). They're #10 phillips oval head, and should be an inch (correction, 7/8") or so long. The common 12 thread pitch is too course. The screws for visors have the same thread.

Thank you

Ha, yep, I lifting off Deadhead;)

If I'm reading my gauge right, the thread count is 16. I'll see if something comes up. Yep, must be 16. my sample is 7/8" and I count 14 threads.

That screw grommet is not factory, the original one was just concave to match the underside of the screw and was about the same diameter as the screw head. I am about 99% positive on that, lets see if someone chimes in.

I've had good luck at body shop supply stores...
Look for the au-vee-co book which has a ton of the original clips, screws and what have yous.
Good luck

Could be - after 40 plus years go by but those screws were all pulled from unmolested trucks. My k1500 had one screw on the LH door with no grommet or bites from a grommet on the plastic panel and the RH door panel had no screw at all (solid plastic, no hole). I'll bet some variation exists in screw types. A dedicated thread on these screws would be fun.

Judging by my panels anyway, the washer seems larger than you describe. The parameter of the washer shows on the face of the panel. Maybe 7/16" -1/2" diameter I'm guessing. I can't measure at the moment, the panels are "undergoing treatment" using petroleum jelly & inside plastic bags.

But I see your meaning. Smaller appears cleaner. Also, without looking, the the washers for pre-72 door panels are as described.

Perhaps I'm missing it, but I checked and still don't see it. All I can make out are 67-71, and they're a different screw.

So far, I've found #10-16 x 7/8" with all the dressings, but who wants to go in on $250 plus for a bunch of screws? Exactly. I'll check NAPA tomorrow, but from my experience with the local, the odds aren't very good.

X2, their catalog has 800 pages of this stuff, but you have to order thru Fastenal

Re: Where to find 1972 door panel screws?

SUCCESS @ NAPA

Came up empty at Fastenal. Same with @ Au-vee. The problem is verifying the threads work, and according to Au-vee, "we don't have them". That said, yes they do. NAPA didn't let me down. Unlike the original screw, these are tap screws. They're not quite the fit of original, but they tighten up fine.

The marks on the panels from the washers is 1/2", and these washers are 1/2". At least on my panels anyway. But I think I'll use a fiber or rubber washer between the panel and washer. If you prefer to use a different washer, NAPA part # 665-2194 is just the screw. That's my report. ;)

Nice work.

As an aside, I've had some plastic fasteners for the 72 door panels that have an OEM rubber O-ring that goes on the fastener and seals against the door metal but other panels that lack these.

There is no useful information in this thread. I posted earlier that it takes a conical washer under an oval head screw, the washer is barely visible around the head of the screw. Picture of an original screw and mangled washer

I went looking for those washers when I started the restoration on my '71. Found them at a local automotive supplier. They are a common item, by a manufacturer of auto related fasteners. I'll go by there Mon. Tues at the latest and get the part number and manufacture information. Had a sample from my door panel and they were able to match it exactly. Dirt cheap as well. If you want me to pick up a few while I'm there let me know. Will need a mailing address. I'll see what can be done.

Still not useful?

Do you mean belleville washer, such as this fit? https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0172467

That picture looks similar to the original part, but something doesn't look right.

I also believe the correct part might be the same as the washer under the screw on 69-71 door panels with the vinyl covers. Those washers are under the screw which is 1/4 machine screw with an oval Philips head.

Re: Where to find 1972 door panel screws?

The Belleville washer shown isn't deep enough to accommodate the bevel on the screw head. The ones that I have acquired are exactly the same as the mangled one that Randy shows. I got them from ToPeCo Products, 2525 Southport Way, Suite H. National City, Ca 91950 800-266-9314.
Managers email is wade@topecoproducts.com. As I stated before I took a sample from my door panel and he supplied the right one. There are several different sizes. Got the part number at the time but misplaced it. This establishment is about 10 minutes from my house and I will go tomorrow and get the manufacture information and part number and post it. I looked everywhere before I remembered getting other fasteners from them in the past. If as a said you would like me to pick some up for you let me know. I would be more than happy to do so. And put them in the mail tomorrow. You would no doubt have them by Wed. or Thurs. I think that this is strictly an automotive product. The manager may not recognize it by description because of the number of fasteners they stock. Will take one of mine to show him. Using the washers so as not to damage the upholstery on my new door panels.

Nice gesture Smitty, I would appreciate that. Thank you.

I agree, they're likely the same washers as for 69-71 panels. The washers off my 71 fit nicely on the 72. The washers per the Fastenal link above are incorrect.

Here is a picture of what I have. Did notice after taking them out of the package this morning that for use with this screw I have to open the hole in the washer a little. The washer by the way measures just under 1/2" with a caliper.
Difficult holding washer. will counter bore into a piece of scrap and sand the backside slightly so screw will be free in the washer.

Re: Where to find 1972 door panel screws?

Don't know if there is any interest. But the washers shown in my post are in the AU-VE-CO catalog Pt # 16015 #10 Flush Washer. I paid .13 each for them. And fasteners can be found at auveco.com.
