Help - To buy or not to buy

5 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone, my dad and I are looking at this truck and are trying to figure out if it is worth the money (and what it is worth if we don't hang on to it, can't be upside on it before buying), we were hoping for some advice.

The truck is a true Cheyenne Super (check out the SPID, "Cheyenne Super Sport"...there was a thread about this a while back, just some inconsistent records from the factory), very low optioned truck, has rust in the rockers, and these are the only pictures I have of it so far. Motor is a 383 stroker and it "runs and drives"

1) Is it worth the $1,500 asking price
2) How much is it even worth? There's a ton of missing pieces but it is a true super, if it were any other truck in my area I'd go $800 on it but let me know what you think

Real interesting reading here, I had never noticed a 1YE945..........If SSTIM were here, I bet he'd provide an education. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=298810&page=2

Other than that, it's $1500, that's nothing. You're picking up these trucks for $800 BUCKS!? They rusted out? Almost sounds like you want to flip it. I don't know, if it runs well, good suspension/brakes, $2500 seems reasonable, considering it's missing so many parts.

Re: Help - To buy or not to buy

Thank you for your reply, I meant to imply that if it weren't a super I would be able to get a truck in similar shape for around $800. Depending on what's there I would either flip it off the bat or take a part or two for the Cheyenne Super my dad and I are working on. Our hobby is finding these trucks and getting them back out there while trying to save my 68 SWB from the grave along the way.

In this area that's a $3,500.00 truck in the north east probably $5,000.00 :smoke:

If it is truly a decent built 383 stroker that is worth the asking price :mm:

It would already be in my driveway, before someone beat me to it.

Re: Help - To buy or not to buy

Buy it.
lets do the math:
-Complete running and driving '72
-Truck type 'uptick': 1/2 ton
-Option group 'uptick': Cheyenne Super
-Other selling features: 383 (Stroker) engine
-General: appears relatively straight and original
-Immediate trim: Needs front bumper, hubcaps and general cleaning.
-Driveline upgrade: Needs power brakes/booster
...each of these points cost the buyer in my opinion, so simply attribute money to each of them and you will soon see you are definitely above $1500.....easily starting at $3500 in my books.
Go get it!!
all good
Coley

Luckily here in the PNW and where this truck is there's an abundance of them so they are still relatively cheap. Lots of the rusty, incomplete, hack job trucks for sale for $1-3k out here and they don't get sold. There's still enough nice ones and when you have a complete, rust free drive for $5k, why would anybody buy a mismatched truck for $3k lol The prices haven't gotten too crazy like other states where people over pay for them, just to have them.

As far as flipping value, it really depends on how much you can clean it up and how reliable it is. If you need to redo the entire brake system, engine needs work etc then the your total investment may reach it's flip sale price. There have been some real clean trucks going for cheap lately around here, so it's up and down for flipping.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I didn't know that about classics. Yeah, if I had forecast vision I'd be rich enough. Had I sold my home at the high, rent until the bottom dropped & then snaped-up four moderate homes. I'd be a millionaire today. That's the difference between wealthy and not.............fore-site, cash, know-how, luck and cahonas.

What is $1,500?
I could easily spend $1500 for 3 days at Disneyland with lodging and food and tickets.
Buy it and stop cogitating.

Re: Help - To buy or not to buy

Well, here's my 2 cents. $1500 is too much if it's not the truck you want. If it is, I agree this might qualify as a no-brainer buy. If it's the missing parts - don't sweat it, it's more complete than anything I've ever seen for $1500. As for the rust - of course can't see MUCH in the pics, but it just doesn't seem that bad. If the rust work is prohibitive - it doesn't seem like it would break the bank to even pay someone to fix - which isn't cheap. But you'd still be in for less than buying one with no rust. Anyhoo - I think it's worth $1500 all day long - but I wouldn't buy it because I have two other projects, no more room, etc. I'm trying to thin out and good deals keep poppin up, ha. That's another good point - I wouldn't be the first guy to buy a truck because I convinced myself I'd never, ever find a deal like the one I was staring at. But of course, that was several trucks ago... ha.

If you are not sure don't torture yourself.. Post up the info in this thrread where someone can buy it and within 6/8 hours you won't have to worry about it anymore..;)

Re: Help - To buy or not to buy

Well everyone I've decided to pass on the truck, turns out it doesn't have a clean title and the owner doesn't know the story behind it, etc. etc. The truck is posted on the Portland, OR craigslist and can be found under "1972 chevy" for $1,800. If it's still there the guy said $1,500 was his bottom dollar because he paid $1,300 for it, but you know how that goes. Good luck!
