Winches /Where to buy
I have been looking at winches for the front of my 72 K10 ,where is the best place to buy one for the best price ? I have an original Warn bumper for it but Warn winches are out of my price range .I have an original Warn winch but it probably needs rebuilt .

Re: Winches /Where to buy
most winches are set up with a MAP pricing schedule which means it cant be sold under a particular price set by the manufacturer.
so used is where its at. |
Re: Winches /Where to buy
4 Wheel Parts, Winch Depot, and their sister companies will all have the best prices and price match. Get the extended warranty which costs usually 10% of the cost of the winch. It's a "no questions asked" coverage/return policy for 3 years.
Otherwise, grab a Harbor Freight model, pay for the extended warranty, and return it every year. |
Re: Winches /Where to buy
i got two harbor freight winches, one on my rig and one on my trailer. the one on my trailer is about 7 years old and still works great
last year the 8000lb model dragged this thing onto the trailer with two locked up tires up bowed old trailer ramps http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14...psajemmmqi.jpg also the 9k on my sfa s10 is just as strong as my old 9k warn i used to have but its a tad bit slower. i too bought the warranty on the trailer winchas i was paranoid about them breaking but so far so good. i think the one on my s10 might be going on like 3 years old which i got a amazing deal on, picked it up for $175 due to it being a open package and missing the remote. didnt care cause i wanted to hardwire it to the dash anyways |
Re: Winches /Where to buy
If you have a upright 8k it might be worth rebuilding. Those have really gone up in price and are they a good winch.

X2 - hard to beat a Warn 8274, and it looks "right" on the front of our trucks especially with a warn bumper. You can find decent deals on CL, they are easy to rebuild & hold their value. I bought 2 8274s for $100.00 on CL. I put $40.00 in parts in this one (including oil & paint).

Re: Winches /Where to buy
I put one of the Badland 12K winches on my trailer too, and have no complains so far.
I don't use it daily, but I'll bet it's been used more in the last year and a half than 90-percent of the Warn winches I see on the front of all the Jeeps and "off road" trucks I see around here. It's pulled three '57 1/2-ton panel trucks onto the trailer, one with two flat tires, a '59 1-ton panel, a '59 Ford pick-up, a '70 Nova with two flat tires and no front tie rods, a '62 K10 long-step, and a '54 Buick 4-door with seized rear brakes. Oh yeah, it's also pulled my kid's Dodge Dakota and Nissan Sentra up onto it a couple times, and a fully-loaded 4-Runner heading to the scrap yard. So given all that, I just can't say anything bad about the Badlands winch! |

John,
This is the one I have on my car trailer. I loaded Alan's tow truck with it. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...8301_200578301 |
Re: Winches /Where to buy
I ran an 8274 for many years in the beaten down condition it was in. Truly one of the best winches ever made. I now have a Milemarker hydraulic 9.5 in front and a 10.5 for the rear. All of them came off of Craigslist.
Aside from having 2 hoses fabbed at the hydraulic shop for 20$ and the initial 300 for each, I consider them to be a good deal. The first one came loaded with synthetic line, 2 wired remotes, 1 wireless remote (which I haven't really grown into), a new 50' jerk strap, the original wire rope, cover, steel and aluminum hawse fairleads. Comparing the 8274 to the MM is like apples to some genetically modified outer space orange on steroids. I loved my Warn when I had it but the hydraulic walks the electric ones all day long. If I did river fording or ran the risk of killing the engine, I might run one electric. That said, i use mine for skidding trees for firewood, pulling the neighbor kid's car out of the other neighbor's yard when he for got where to park etc. |

I'm going to put a PTO winch up front, and I've got a rear step bumper and was thinking of mounting an electric winch under the bed and having it come out of the bumper. -Brad |

Re: Winches /Where to buy
Brad, have you ever seen a Warn rear winch mount? This was a chrome step bumper with winch mount behind it .These were available for 73 to 88.

Re: Winches /Where to buy
No, never seen one.
I should be able to fab one pretty easily. My biggest concern is how to make it easy to flip the lever for the drum. -Brad |

Got any pics of your PTO. I'm a real fan of hydraulics, but I got a good deal on the Hickey and it's a cool old piece. I'm in the process of hooking up a hydroboost since I didn't go hydraulic on the winch. :chevy: |
Re: Winches /Where to buy
If anyone wants a 12k PTO Ramsey for not much I've got one in DFW. I've also got a driveshaft, blown up (not by me) PTO, and some other bit to include.
