I think the better question is, anyone ahead of schedule and under budget? If so, how do you do it master of time and money?

I don't know if I ever had a budget or a schedule. I think it is more like get it done as soon as possible so I can drive it and spend what I feel I can afford when I can afford it. But I am single and have no children.

I think anyone who has a timeline and a budget could say yes to that question..

You're familiar with the "PI" rule, right? PI=3.14159265359.Multiply that much more in cash and time than you originally figured to complete a job on your truck.

Time you can't do anything about but budget, throw your receipts away and you won't know.

Over budget, not so much as I really never set a budget but over time.... well my 6 month project has been going for 5 years now. Many of those I just stopped working on it. Been getting back on track the last few months.

I must be the all time record holder. I have had my truck 28 years and it still isn't finished!
Budget wise, I fix/upgrade what I can afford and keep it running as best I can!

I'm over budget on parts that I'm behind schedule installing.

Body work is a great thing to do while on budget.....seems like it takes so long that you suddenly have money.

no schedule, and no money for a budget.

I keep buying more trucks. That slows me from making any real progress on the one I intend to restore as my daily driver.

(Hmmmm . . . .Now if I could only remember which one of these trucks that was . . . .)

Old trucks are like renovating an old house. As a very wise old engineer contractor told me years ago "figure it as close as you can for the amount of time and money you think it'll take, and then double it, and you'll be close".
I think it's the same theory on old trucks, except 3 times. It's been almost 7 years, and we haven't heard it run yet.

Ya'll are making me feel better. I am about to hit year 5. Mine runs but has no brakes, or doors, or fenders or bed. Other than that everything is done. I had no budget. I just buy parts when I have the money and work on it when I feel like it. Bad part is I haven't touched it since October and have no motivation in the near future.

I hear ya, I do the same thing work on it when I can and have money, usually money is tight as I'm the only Income, so my family comes first then bills then truck... And I know it can be difficult at times I've had my truck for over 4 yrs before I actually got it on the road..
Best thing I can tell you is go and look at other builds and that will get you motivated...That's what I did and it helped...I still need a ton of work on mine but I can atleast enjoy driving it now...And a little at a time...sometimes I wouldn't work on it for 2-3 weeks and then go out there in one evening and get more done...how can I help...

Re: Any one else behind schedule and over budget?

I'm not over budget right now, but I visited a couple of shops yesterday to talk about body work, and I'm extremely discouraged.

This is a clean truck from Arizona -- not perfect, but really very clean for a '61. I want it sand blasted, repaired, and repainted a factory paint job. First shop said it would be around $50k, second shop said $25 to $35k.

In this area I don't have too many choices for shops -- most places only do insurance work. I've got one more place to try, but they'll be more expensive since their labor rate is $100/hour.

I love the truck, but how do I justify $25k on my toy? On the other hand, I know if I don't spend that, it will start to deteriorate quickly here in IL.

Anyway, really bummed today. I ran into a stripped screw while replacing the door weatherstripping and I just had to stop.

Re: Any one else behind schedule and over budget?

That's outrageous! I would say $8-15k if it is what you say it is. One thing that could save you some $ is blow it apart yourself.
