Looking for SBC Radiator WITHOUT filler neck
 

Hello,
I am new to the forum and seeking advice for cooling system setups. I own a 1947 Studebaker Pickup that was modified with a 350 SBC and a 350 TH. The current cooling system is aging and I was hoping to upgrade since I will be going through the exercise of replacing the system. Here is what I am looking for:

- Aluminum 3-Row Radiator with shroud and dual cooling fans.

I have a custom remote filler due to the small volume claim and would like to find a radiator that does not have a filler neck but has the capacity to fit A/T cooling lines into the side of the core as well. Basically I am looking at something like the below link, but without the filler neck.

Seems like a stupid question, but where do you find one of these? It seems that all of them that I have found so far have the filler neck. The total volume claim space is 32 x 18 x 3.

I would try Superior radiator, they are US made and I'm very happy with mine.

I need to ask, where would the fill be? Usually the fill is at the highest point to minimize the chance for air pockets

I am unable to see the item in your link.

Is there a reason why you can't use a radiator with a higher pressure cap than what's on the remote filler neck? There are some factory vehicles like this and I have done it in my own projects.

Not a reason that I know of other than to eliminate a possible leak point? I am not very familiar with cooling systems. Below are some pictures of the current setup. The cap on the radiator is almost impossible to access which is why there was a custom remote filler installed. The body panels of the truck limit a lot of what can be used in the area. The current setup seems to underrated and overheats often.

94-96 Caprice/Roadmaster/Fleetwood/Impala SS rad should work. Check the sizes on Rockauto. The pressure cap is on the remote reservoir, no cap on the rad tanks.

That setup reminds me of the V8 Blazer I was building. I put the radiator in a custom support which prevented access to the cap. So I used an upper filler hose from a 2003-ish Dodge Durango w/ 318 to get aq filler neck. The radiator got an 18 psi cap.

Wherever the catch can is attached is where you should use the lower pressure cap. You could use a 14 - 16 psi cap on the radiator and an 18 psi cap on the filler neck.

The Caprice radiator ir also a good idea. Volvos, VW and Ford vans are all applications I'm aware of that use a pressurized reservoir with no filler or cap on the radiator.

Just as 1project2many said put a good 18 lb cap on the radiator and done. With the remote filler you should be good. Probably not much more chance of it leaking than a hose connection and maybe less.

I am not very familiar with cooling systems so excuse the stupid question in advance. I currently have a 16 lb cap on the remote filler tube. So by putting a 18 lb cap on the radiator filler will prevent it from leaking? What will happen if I break the pressure on the 16 lb cap (open the cap)?

I didn't notice the overflow bottle attached to the filler last night. mr48chev gives the correct installation for your truck.

The 18 psi cap on the filler neck should not vent or leak although I'd probably look for one with a little higher pressure just to add insurance. If you open the 16 psi cap it will be just like opening a system with only one 16 psi cap.

You can get a late '90s models vette (w/LT1) radiator without a filler from rockauto for a really good price. I almost went that route but decided on one with a filler.

Since the neck goes straight up it would work and also would keep the engine compartment clean. Also it was mentioned about the 94-96 roadmaster, they are pretty wide, that is what my LT1 I'm using came out of and would't dare fit in my '53 but may in the stude.
