In-cab gas tank question

Today I was contemplating whether my fuel gauge was working correctly or not - so I took a look through the filler with a strong flashlight. It is indeed very full, as the gauge appears - I probably filled early last winter when I put in some Stabil. As I looked inside, I could see all the way what I believe was near the bottom, it is very clean and bright, (the metal inside all the way down). Near the bottom, I saw what looks like a small diameter black hose, which is along the bottom - it that a normal part of the fuel system? I guess I imagined there being a fuel pick up with the coming out near the center/mid-way up the tank. Thanks in advance...

I don't think so. Unless you're describing the 'sock' on the end of the fuel pickup, there shouldn't be anything down there but the float assembly.
Could be a piece of broken siphon hose, from who knows when.
If you are getting fine pieces of black rubber in your carburetor, it's breaking down and should be pulled out.
Best way is to empty the tank, move the seatback forward [if 67 or 68] or pull seat if you have to. Then disconnect and remove float sender arm, and fish in there with a long coat hanger. Have a buddy be your eyes looking down the filler neck.
Or if the rubber isn't breaking down, forget it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if hose was added to extend the pickup or not. It's definitely tuning and appears to be in perfect shape from what I could see. I'm very pleased that it is so clean inside. Thank you again. Ned

If it's an intentional modification...great. As long as it's doing no harm.
I just never heard of it.
