So I moved my tilt up this evening and this fell out. Looked through the forum and found this pic and a post saying that this is a backing plate or slider that the shift indicator slides up and down as the tilt goes through the range of motion.

My question is can this be installed from the outside or do I need to disassemble my column to install??

That is from the bowl and does support the bottom of the pointer. It's originally swaged into the die cast bowl, you will have to epoxy it to repair it. Complete disassembly required. It's a bunch of hard work if you have never done it before. I explained all the steps to disassemble and assemble one of those.
Thin the thread had tilt column gurus in the title.

Re: tilt

Thanks Randy, that's about my luck....but I do need to replace the bottom shaft bearing since its pretty gritty and noisy, so I guess I should look at this as an opportunity and not a set back.

I have had later model GM tilts apart (key in column) wasn't terrible, just took a little time, patients and research to make sure everything was in correctly. I do have the pin pulling tool, but nothing to pull the outer column housing, but should be able to make something that'll do the job?

Who has a good source for the bearing/retainer set up?? well I suppose tilt column parts in general??

Those bearings are available almost everywhere, fleabay might be a source...
