Cordless Impacts
 

With the age of our beloved prefect in every way trucks. What are y'all using to convince hardware that hasn't been removed in the past 40-50 years to break loose? I have a decent air compressor that can run air tools but it is god awful loud. I have an air ratchet, 3/8 impact, and a 1/2 impact. However, they all need a tune up. They leak air and because of the leaks aren't as powerful as they should be. They are all pretty old. They were my dad's when he worked on the flight line at Bergstrom AFB.
With that being said I am thinking about getting a 3/8 impact that is battery operated. Hell, I'd settle for a corded one asst this point. Looking for suggestions.

I've got this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and I love it. Nice to have on smaller jobs. Has a ton of breakaway torque as well.

Faced with the same dilemma recently I went with Pneumatic replacement for my age-old and failed 1/2 air impact.

I purchased this:

Ingersoll Rand Air Impact Wrench — 1/2in. Drive, 4.2 CFM, 600 Ft.-Lbs. Torque, Model# 231C

..and so far have found it to be the real deal. No fake torque spec or over exaggerated claims. Just solid performance. It was on sale, if I remember right I got it for around 100 bucks in the store locally in Dallas.

I have a set of Milwaukee m18 fuel impacts.Since buying the 3/8 and 1/2 “,I never use my air impacts. These things are awesome.

This one has served me well for 3-4 years, but I've never used it on really nasty rusted bolts. And it doesn't have as much torque as a 1/2" drive air tool.

As you can see a little lower on the webpage, you can buy a kit with 2 batteries & charger, or the bare tool only. Since I already had a Bosch drill that uses the same batteries, I bought just the "bare" impact driver on Amazon.

My lithium ion batteries are 6-7 years old and still hold a charge for a very long time. Both the tools and charger are first rate.

x2 for Milwaukee fuel stuff. I have not used my IR 1/2 air impact since I got the Milwaukee 3 years ago

I've had a an I/R 231 since around 1995! It's beat to hell and still works great. Got the plastic protector 10-12 years ago. Think I need to treat it to a new one!

In the past few months I almost exclusively use a Milwaukee M18 1/2" impact, its kind of heavy and large but it is as strong as any air impact I have ever used. Kind of spendy but can be found on offerup or craigslist reasonable.

If your air compressor is noisy I would fix that first...put it outside, build an enclosure if needed, put it in the basement, build an enclosure around it, something. Its the first thing I did with my compressor.

I picked up the same one about 6 months ago and have nothing but GOOD things to say about it. Dewalt really has their batteries figured out. They hold a charge for a good amount of time. This thing really has torque too. I also like the fact that the batteries are interchangeable between other Dewalt products.

I used the Milwaukee fuel 1/2 drive to rebuild my front in at my friends shop. it worked so good I decide to buy a 1/2 drive for my self, all my cordless drivers and drills, led lights ect are Makita. I have 5 battery pack so naturally I buy a Makita. to be honest I should have bought the Milwaukee seems to have more torque.

X2 on the Milwaukee stuff can beat it. But sometimes still need a big air impact. Last time I used my air impact was on a dmax harmonic balancer bolt. But I takes close to 400lbs to get them off. But the cordless does the rest.

I'll probably get a lot of slack for this, but the Harbor Freight electric impact wrench is a beast! I've taken apart my front suspension, rear bed and many other rusted bolts and it has performed flawlessly. $40 (with coupon of course) is hard to beat.

ancient 1/2 pneumatic I've had forever... no need to toss every two years for the latest battery model, it get's em loose most of the time. If that don't get it loose, I have a 3/4" breaker... If that don't work I have a cheater for the 3/4" breaker. If that don't work... I get mad! :smoke:

Do you mean the corded 1/2" one? I always figured it would be lousy and never tried. Just got their new 3/8 cordless ratchet and its been pretty handy.

This is what I use every single day at work and home. Can’t kill em and they have plenty of power.
That being said dewalt has some real good 20 volt stuff as well.

I have Ridgid cordless tools, including 3/8 impact. I have nothing bad to say abut them.

I don't know about the others, but Ridgid has a lifetime warranty if you register them. You must register them.

All you have to do is take the problem tool to an approved service center and it's repaired or replaced.

I use milwaukee fuel 3/8" for sheet metal bolts and the big dog 1/2" for lugs, cab mounts and chassis stuff. Never had to bust out air impact since buying the 1/2" plus I like the fact of not dragging an air hose around. :metal:

Cordless is dominated by the Milwaukee M18 Fuel.
Should be some bargains soon because they're updating their product line about now.

Make sure you get the M18 Fuel line. They have 3 levels of technology/performance.
M18 (brushed), M18 brushless, M18 Fuel (also brushless).

I have snapon battery impacts...we had them at work and if a tool could ever be abused we could do it...we probably use them more in a weeks time than a normal person could use in a year..we used them for years..I likedm so much I got on ebay and found a slightly used one for $200...work was paying around $600 for them...then snapon changed the design and they arnt worth a bucket of mud....now we have ingersalls...and wow they're a beast...so if mine ever gives out ill be shopping for snapon....

I have a snap on cordless impact that's about 9 years old. Works fantastic. I did have to get a couple new batteries last year(ni-cad). Other than that its been trouble free other than a lock ring hear and there.
